Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The general consensus of Trinity students is that there is some diversity on campus, but that there is not much interaction between ethnic and cultural groups. The majority of Trinity students seem to be from the upper-middle class, white, and American. However, the cultural clubs really are relatively active around campus. Associations like AASA, nominally for Asian-Americans, welcome members from every background and often have culturally-themed get-togethers during the weeknights that are fun for a study break.

Problems like racial profiling by Campus Safety officers and a lack of interaction between students of different backgrounds have been talked about a lot recently. While these are horrible situations that should not exist in the first place, the fact that they are being aired so much in the open does prove that the real majority of Trinity students are those who are concerned about these trends and eager to see them end.

We're Kind of All the Same

Though diversity is an important part of a college community, we don't really have much diversity. There are obviously all types of people who go here, but I would have to say the most "typical" kind of student is the preppy type hailing from a nice New England town. The "frat boy" and "lax bro" styles are popular among the guys and girls tend to get dressed up for class and by dinner time are rocking the norts and t shirt and stud earrings they wore to the gym. If this is not your style however, no one will really notice; have no fear.

Only Economic

The only differences among students exist in economic background, and other than that, Trin has a lot of diversity among ethnicities/religions/etc. Especially evident in the sciences

Culture Shock

Trinity is a strange microcosm that, to be honest, I am still adjusting to. Although we have an exceptionally strong presence of "White, preppy, privileged," they are not the only community represented at Trinity; however, they are the most vocal and visible student group. I do believe that certain individuals, myself included, feel that the Greek life/ "privileged" community creates a substantial percentage of the social environment which can tend to make people feel ostracized and excluded. However, there are many opportunities elsewhere for students to become culturally, ethnically, politically, or religiously involved. We do have a diverse campus, intellectually, ethnically, religiously but I strongly believe we could do better and contribute in a more efficient manner to making dejected students feel more welcomed. To start I believe that the "camp trintrin" or "biddie" connotations must be stopped because they only hinder our growth as a community.

Trinity is, for the most part, a tolerant community. EROS is a Trinity club open to any student interested in GLTB rights issues

Political Activity

Democrats and liberal republicans seem to be about evenly matched on Trinity’s campus. Most students vote in the elections, and a good amount attend debates beforehand to learn about the different candidates for Student Government positions and their ideas for the school.

Economic Status

Most students at Trinity seem to be from upper- or upper-middle-class families.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Sample AASA [the Asian American Students Association] – hosts several parties and cultural events a year in an attempt to further students understanding of Asian cultures. It offers kitchen-use and weekly get-togethers for its members. Its members are of all different backgrounds. www.trincoll.edu/orgs/aasa
