Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Trinity has a reputation of being a party school, and it is well-deserved. There is never a lack of parties and activities on campus. There is also some diversity among the frats, so if you would rather not spend Saturday night with girls wearing real pearls in their ears and guys proudly sporting Nantucket Reds, don’t fret (they’re actually pink, anyway). There will be parties going on at less-traditional houses, too; and it is a rare weekend when Trinity itself does not sponsor a party in the Party Barn (Vernon Social Center).

If you want to head off campus, your options are kind of limited. Sure, the freshmen like to head to that sleazy bar behind the gas station that doesn’t card. Freshmen used to head to the Tap, a Trinity College fixture, just off-campus, until over 40 underage students were picked up one night in a raid. Still, Bourbon Street is the place to be on Thursday nights, and if you want to get away from the Trinity crowd, check out Pig’s Eye for a gathering of Hartford’s finest young professionals (acting in an unprofessional manner).

If You Like to Remember Your Nights, It Sucks

You can't drink at any of the frats unless you're 21. It's also very hard to get in so if you're not one of the pretty, slutty girls.. good luck. The school doesn't provide anything for you to go to, so other than frats there's nothing to do. Nightlife is EXTREMELY boring.

Lame

This is the main part that needs work. There are bars not to far off campus that are easily accessible by cab and campus shuttle, but for those under 21, if you're not into a group or the frat scene, you'll have a tough time finding other places to party.

Frats

The frat parties are fun but there are only a few good ones and it can get repetitive. Not too much to do off campus. The partying does not have much diversity.

Organization Parties

Many cultural clubs throw parties in Vernon social center, otherwise known as The Party Barn, periodically to raise money and awareness for their cause: for example, every fall the Asian American Students Association throws a dance party where they hand out free glow sticks. In the fall and spring, cookouts and picnics are common as well.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Pig’s Eye Pub

Strange but fun—they have pool tables, video games, and even a barbershop chair. No cover.

356 Asylum St.

(860) 270-4747

Sully’s Pub

There’s live music seven nights a week. The stage is set to the middle, so the bar has a full viewing area and acts like a mini-amphitheater! cover varies, depending on the quality of the night’s band.

2071 Park St.

(860) 231-8881

The Tap Café

Featured in Playboy as “The College Bar of the Month,” for March of ‘05, the Tap is the bar Trinity students go to for convenience as well as pleasure—it is closer to many students’ dorms than the library is. It becomes overrun by Trinity students at an early hour, so come early. A word of warning: the Tap is not strict at all about carding, but is raided by the LCB (The Liquor Control Board) periodically.

217 New Britain Ave.

(860) 525-6110

City Steam Brewery Cafè

A great brew pub with a restaurant, pool tables, and live comedy acts. Although the beer selection is great, expect overpriced food and long waits on weekends. No cover.

942 Main St.

(860) 525-1600

Bar With No Name

18 and over. One thing to mention about “No Name” is its younger crowd—even though it says “18 and over” at the door, it’s probably more like 16 and over. So guys, before you hook up with a girl, play like the bouncer and ask for ID. Cover is $10.

115 Asylum St.

(860) 293-2344

Bourbon Street North

Voted Hartford Advocate’s “Best Friday Happy Hour.” It includes a dance floor, two bars, and several pool tables. Great live music is abundant five days a week.

70 Union Pl.

(860) 525-1014

The Brickyard Cafe

The lower floor is a regular bar with pool tables, and the upper floor has a dance floor, loud music, and good drinks. It serves as a good alternative to Trinity parties, and “Fat Tuesdays” can draw ridiculous crowds sometimes.

113-115 Allyn St.

(860) 249-2112

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

It doesn’t really matter if you aren’t 21, because most students hardly ever leave campus, anyway—nobody will card you at a dorm party. However, if you really want to leave, on Thursday nights the Bar With No Name is 18-and-over. A better bet is probably the Tap—although it goes through strict periods, students get quite a few drinks at the Tap freshman year.
