College Prowler Take

Trinity students tend to stick pretty close to campus for most aspects of daily life, with one large exception—we eat out. Hartford offers great dining. The city itself is populated with people from all different cultural backgrounds and that fact is shown off superbly by the restaurant choices. There is everything from expensive restaurants for special treats (Max’s Downtown) to everyday restaurants with great food (Timothy’s—don’t forget to try the chocolate cake). There are great Italian sandwich shops (Così) and Middle-Eastern restaurants (Tapas), all-night diners left over from the 1950s (Goldroc) and late-night donut shops (Krispy Kreme—seriously, remember that for finals time). If you head out into the city, you will eat well.

Off-campus dining receives a good mark for variety and quality, though the grade suffers a little due to the fact that you may have to rely on public transportation to actually get to any of these places; the great restaurants are not easy to get to without a car, and the surrounding neighborhoods are not exactly charming.

For late night pizza cravings, Campus Pizza or City Pizza are both cheap and deliver. For slightly more expensive but infinitely more gourmet pizza, Nutshell Pizza is a popular place to call.

There is a restaurant right off campus called Timothy’s that people go to sometimes, and there are some restaurants out by Westfarms Malls, but for the most part, I eat on campus. For a change, rather than going to a restaurant, my friends and I will get together at someone’s dorm room with a kitchen, and cook our own meals.

Timothy’s is just across Zion...

Timothy’s is just across Zion Street to the west of Trinity. The fare is pretty exotic, with a spinach and feta quesadilla and great burgers, making it equally friendly to carnivores as well as vegetarians. However, the real draw of Timothy’s is the Black Magic Cake. The luscious chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and a scoop of vanilla ice cream is, well, magical.

Restaurants in Hartford are a big...

Restaurants in Hartford are a big draw for the city, with places like Black Eyed Sally’s for the culture, and Carbone’s for the best Italian meal you can get anywhere. The Red Plate, which is right downtown, has excellent sandwiches and they encourage imitating Meg Ryan in When Harry Met Sally—being picky as all hell.

A favorite place to eat or just to get a snack and coffee is Così. Along with great coffee and home-made Italian sandwich bread, they also have a “Make-your-own-s’mores” desert option. It is delicious, to say the least!
