College Prowler Take

Those who live off campus, for the most part, live directly off campus—no more than a block away from the dorms. You don’t save much money by renting an off-campus apartment, and you miss out on important things like an Ethernet connection, cable TV, and convenience and safety benefits. Because students choose to live so closely, they don’t lose out on much of the community feel of Trinity, nor do they receive a greater feeling of independence or individuality.

The only real reason to live off-campus is if you live in a sorority or fraternity house. Those are located on Allen Place, a block from Vernon Place, a main street of Trinity’s campus. Each year, several people will also rent houses or apartments on Crescent Street, which is the same street that houses the notorious Sophomore Slums.

In no way is off-campus housing worth it. That’d be my advice.

If dorms do not appeal to a student, there are houses for rent along Allen Place, which is technically off campus, but really considered part of it, just as Crescent Street is. Since there really are no bad dorms, and usually there is enough room, students have no need to go beyond these options for off-campus housing. However, if a student did want a place farther away from campus, there really is not a lot of opportunity. The neighborhood in which Trinity is situated is not the safest, and students are limited as to parking on campus.

There are off-campus housing options, but not many students choose to explore them, mostly due to security reasons and convenience. Primarily, residential students attending Trinity live on campus in one of the dormitories or in a themed house, i.e. a fraternity, sorority, society, multicultural house or the community service house. Being situated in a city, crime and vandalism are a major problem that the school and its students have to deal with. With these concerns in mind, most students feel the safest living on campus and having the resources of the college always at hand.

Next door to the Sophomore Slums are apartment buildings that tend to be occupied by Trinity students. Usually, students do not move off campus until their junior or senior year, and they usually move into these apartments on Crescent Street.

Off-campus housing is rare. I would not think it to be very safe. Entering my senior year, I don’t know anyone who is living off campus.
