College Prowler Take
Students tend to express varying opinions about the safety of Trinity’s campus. In general, however, students agree on the basic facts: we are in the center of a large urban area; there is crime; the muggings that occur each year usually happen to naïve freshman walking alone at night. Don’t walk alone at night. This is an unwritten rule in most urban areas, though. Trinity definitely tries to control the crime on campus. While we’re an open campus, meaning that anyone can walk through at any time, ID cards are needed to open all student dormitories and facilities. Call boxes are located all over campus (over fifty in all) to alert campus safety to any problems quickly. Hartford police cars can often be seen parked in the darker areas of campus. However, there was a stabbing last year when a student stepped out of his dorm for a 3 a.m. cigarette, and there have been several reports of muggings at gunpoint over the past few years. However, if you use common sense, and use the shuttle instead of walking alone at night, chances are, you will usually feel safe, despite the isolated incidents of crime on campus.

Honestly, campus police are not too visible. It seems like every semester someone is mugged. |

Security is at the forefront of...
Security is at the forefront of importance to both Trinity students and faculty members. The college has made numerous efforts to ensure safety for its students. Specifically, the administration has installed card readers at each dorm entrance, runs a shuttle across campus at night so that students do not have to walk, hired Hartford police officers to patrol the grounds, and has a squad of six campus safety officers on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Despite the college’s efforts, theft and assault still seem to be major problems on campus. |

Trinity is a generally safe school. It is an open campus, meaning that people from the surrounding neighborhood may enter at any time. Instead of decreasing safety, this policy actually helps the relationship between the school and the outside community. Campus Safety officers are available 24 hours a day, and there are many emergency call boxes located around the campus. However, students need to exercise common sense and most students choose not to walk alone at night. |

I usually feel safe on campus. I have never personally had any problems, although each year several muggings occur on campus. For those who don’t feel comfortable walking, Trinity runs several shuttles around the campus and the Hartford area. |

Trinity students access their dorm...
Trinity students access their dorm rooms via codes, which in the past were also their means of access to their dorm building. Trinity feared that students were giving out their codes, and that people seeking access to the buildings were guessing at codes, so the code system was removed from the outer doors of the dorms. Instead, students use their ID cards to open the doors to their dorms. |
