Transportation

Quick Stats

Best Ways to Get Around Town
  • Hartford Public Transit (All Trinity students get a complimentary year-long bus pass.)
  • Taxi Cab
  • Trinity College Shuttle
Best Ways to Get to the Airport Taxis are relatively expensive. Oftentimes, around winter and spring breaks, students will drive other students to the airport for a much smaller fee. There aren’t any very convenient public buses that go to the airport, nor are there any Trinity shuttles. A cab ride to the airport costs around $35, not including tip.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Transportation on campus is fine. If you don’t have a car, you will have friends—loving and wonderful friends, who will drive you around. There is a bus that will take you right to the mall, and Trin-Trin periodically revamps its off-campus shuttle service, so depending on how it is running any particular day, you may be able to get a free Trinity ride to the movies, the mall, the grocery store, or the small, sweet West Hartford shopping area.

The cabs will get you downtown for some partying at night, and then if you hoof it to the train station (a short walk from most bars) you will find some cabs that will get you back home to your dorm. That is about all the cabs are good for. Around finals time, certain entrepreneurial Trinitron students with cars will set up shuttle services to and from Bradley International, the closest airport. Take advantage of it if you can’t get a ride from a friend. It is far cheaper than cabs, and Bradley has no shuttle services of its own. If you are trying to get to New York or Boston, the train and bus station is located directly downtown, and there are many trains (nice) or buses (cheap) a day from which you can chose.

Bring a Car

I brought a car and it was awesome to drive around the city. The shuttle is great for getting around campus but without a car u can be stranded on campus.

Bad

As bad as Hartford is, the school still does very little for transportation. There is a shuttle, but it takes forever to come, often doesn't run, and only takes you to limited places. The shuttle also only drives you around campus, it won't take you off. The school won't drive you at certain times to places no matter how badly you need to get there. Also, if you can't get driven somewhere walking really isn't an option since the area around campus is incredibly dangerous. (There are often muggings and threats with knives/guns on campus cause there's no gate and people walk in but that's another story.)

Enough

Hartford is a city, so you get what is typical of a city;

Taxis are all around, but of course have a rip you off type of fare. There is a local train and bus station (Union Station) that is only about 5 minutes away (depending on traffic) when driving. There is an airport, but I have never gone there so I can't comment on how far. There is a local bus system, but I can't vouch for that and have heard it is almost always not on time. You get a free U-Pass for the local bus system. So if you can figure it out and are willing to use the bus system, then I am assuming you really could get around the area without paying. But if, like most students, you don't want to use that pass/ride the bus system, then you can definitely get around via taxi, train, and typical city transportation. Just be ready to sometimes pay what might seem like a rip off, then again, that shouldn't be surprising if you have ever spent time in a real city.
