Comparable Schools' Diversity Grades:
College Prowler Take
Trinity has been notoriously labeled a white upper-middle-class resort for a reason. The University has been trying over the years to improve the diversity of the campus, which is, in the opinion of almost everyone on campus, sadly lacking. Though Trinity does not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity and race in their admissions policy, the majority of students who choose to attend the school are white. On campus, diversity is welcomed and celebrated, and there are several clubs for different cultures that make themselves very visible across campus through a series of University-sponsored events. Students don’t take issue with the color of another’s skin, or where they’re from—the campus is very accepting. Unfortunately, however, Trinity seems to be the only place in San Antonio where it is possible to go an entire day without hearing someone speak a different language. There is about a 50/50 mixture of men and women, so one voice does not overpower the other in and out of the classrooms; Trinity’s most recent production of the Vagina Monologues actually included performances by men.You can get a phenomenal academic experience at this school, but if you want diversity, take advantage of the study-abroad program, because that’s the only way to get any real diversity out of Trinity.

Trinity is not very diverse at all, with the student body being predominantly white and coming from a private school.

I came from a town with no diversity whatsoever, so to me this campus is pretty diverse. Of course upper-middle class white kids make up the majority, but there is a significant multicultural population that has expanded my once-narrow view of diversity. Ideologically, it's pretty split down the middle. However, there is an absence of political thought on campus, which kind of disappointed me. Few homosexuals, and most of the girl ones stick to the same sorority.

Our African American population is...
Our African American population is woefully tiny. There’s a good Asian and Hispanic population. We have many multicultural societies, and anyone is welcome to join them. Economically, the campus is very diverse. Half of our students are on financial aid and scholarships. Many are rich, many are middle class, and many are poor. Everyone socializes with just about everyone, regardless. |

The campus, overall, is not diverse. I went to a mostly white high school, and things just got whiter when I got to Trinity. Diversity, however, is available and present, if you go out of your way to find it. The multicultural network is very strong and does a lot of campus-wide events, but none of them are mandatory, so a multicultural experience will not be handed to you if you attend Trinity. Just like a class, you have to persue it. |

Most people here are tolerant. Our school could try harder than it does to be diverse, but I think they are afraid of putting off the kind of people who go there by having more minorities at our school. I have heard that it is really, really hard to be black here. People are pretty class- and status-conscious at this school. |
FactsEconomic Status
Many Trinity students are able to attend the school because of student loans and scholarships, but a vast number of them come from wealthy families. For example, oftentimes, parking becomes scarce after Christmas because of all the new cars that show up on campus.
Gay Pride
Because of its perceived apathy, the student body also appears to be generally accepting of homosexuality. There are certain groups that might morally oppose it, but they do not raise protest, and there is an LGBSA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Straight Alliance) that is accepting of all sexualities. The campus welcomes openness, and in 2004, Trinity hosted its first gay- pride week. Unfortunately, the gay community is generally quiet on campus, and not very visible.
Minority Clubs
There is a strong segment of minority clubs on campus who receive funding to host social events and increase awareness about diversity. From the Chinese Culture Club to the Latino Exchange, there is a club for each minority. And there is a willingness of the administration to allow new clubs to form for students who don’t feel as if there is one already in existence that meets their needs.
Most Common Religions
There are at least three Christian-affiliated groups on campus, and they have their meetings on campus throughout the week.
Political Activity
Trinity is somewhat politically active, albeit divided. There is a large number of conservative students, although there is a Campus Democrats group. The more liberal students tend to be more vocal about their beliefs, although there is very little open conflict, as most students are not altogether outspoken. There are some who consider the student body to be generally apathetic about politics and global events, in general.
