College Prowler Take

Alcoholism is a bigger threat to the Trinity campus than drug abuse, but if a student wants to find drugs, he or she won’t have to look terribly hard. On move-in day, some freshmen like to sit on the balcony and enjoy a joint before settling into campus life. This does not mean that security will ignore flagrant drug use. One upperclassman was kicked out of school for having marijuana in his closet, along with every conceivable mean of drug paraphernalia. Pot can be found at most off-campus parties, and sometimes in the dorm parties as well, but that is about the hardest drug that most
students try.

Trinity is like many other campuses in that just about any vice is available to the students who have the inclination to look for it. Most students don’t flaunt their drug use, and it is often hard to spot it occurring through the crowds of drunk partygoers. Most students are happy enough just to partake in the many alcohol-related activities that frequent campus. Pot is not the only drug available on campus—cocaine, speed, and various other drugs will sometimes be used, but students are never pressured to try them, so they won’t ever have to do drugs if they don’t want to.

There is a social sort of scene, mostly with marijuana and the ‘lighter’ drugs being used in a sort of recreational sense. We were next to a room where students did heavier things, and the students knew which rooms tended to have the drugs, but the presence of them on campus wasn’t overwhelming or hardcore in the sense of there being an epidemic.

Drugs really aren’t a big deal on campus, unless you consider caffeine and alcohol drugs. Caffeine and booze are so abused that students might as well walk around with IVs in their arms to more efficiently pump these substances into their bodies. The caffeine, I would think, is normal for any college campus. The alcohol problem depends on your class year and who you hang out with. The Greeks plan all events around alcohol. First-years discover alcohol and binge drink a lot. Upperclassmen drink less often, but boy do they make up for lost time. Other than these drugs, pot is the only other drug really present at all on campus, and it’s not an issue at all. You probably wouldn’t know that there was pot on campus, unless you go out and look for it or hear stories of people being busted.

The drug scene on campus is not as bad as you would think. If anyone does drugs, they usually just smoke pot. And who doesn’t do that in college?

It is definitely present if you’re into that sort of thing, but they’re not as noticeable as at certain larger universities. Trinity’s strict policies certainly discourage use on campus. Parties, however, are a different story—everything from pot to coke to other recreational drugs is present.
