College Prowler Take

In San Antonio, the culture is rich and inviting, and when it is embraced, it will give you more and more reasons to fall in love with the city. More of the fun activities take place in the daytime, with the exception of NIOSA and a few other events, and San Antonio does tend to be something of a ghost town on Sundays, when all but a few stores and the local Wal-Mart are closed. However, fun nightlife can be found if you look in the right places. So, whether you prefer to head out in the day or night, you’ll be able to party in any fashion that you so desire.

Since Trinity is so close to the Sunken Garden Theater, there is the possibility that you could accidentally walk into a Bob Marley tribute festival or hear the sounds of a rock concert from campus. Most Trinity students don’t interact with the other universities in the city, preferring to go out with their friends from classes and extracurricular activities. You can find a frat party almost every night of the week, and with a minimal amount of looking, you’ll be able to find a night club or a place to sit back and listen to jazz music, if that’s your thing. There are coffee shops everywhere, a few Starbucks across the street from other Starbucks, and even one open 24 hours (for those who must have coffee before they can function enough to make another cup of coffee while studying). The biggest mistake that too many Trinity students make is not leaving campus. Even the crowded areas of San Antonio are worth exploring. There is plenty to do that does not involve partying, and you will learn more from getting out into new areas of the city than you will sitting around and learning a new drinking game.

There’s a lot to do that doesn’t involve tourists (unless you really like large, annoying crowds, in which case feel free to roam among them), but if you like to drive fast, stay away from San Antonio. On the freeway, everyday is a Sunday.

The actual atmosphere of San Antonio is much different from the atmosphere observed when downtown as a tourist. Although the downtown tourist spots are very enjoyable, the fun adds up very quickly and is often much too expensive for the college budget. San Antonio is a very ‘patchy’ city. By patchy, I mean that there are extremely rich parts and then extremely poor parts. Often, these areas are only separated by one street. There are numerous other universities present in San Antonio. Most of these schools have local students, unlike Trinity that has students from all over the world. When in San Antonio, I would stay away from any place that you feel in danger. Even though I lived in San Antonio for five years and did not have any encounter with violence, I would just stay on the ‘safe’ sides of town. These are typically located on the north side of the city. The tourist attractions located downtown, and the various missions around the city, are places I would visit while in San Antonio.

I think that the atmosphere in San Antonio is phenomenal. Compared to what I’m used to in Philadelphia, the city is extremely clean in the downtown areas, and they always seem to be throwing a party or festival. The diversity of culture is wonderful, too, and instead of riots, they just have fun when Fiesta and other celebrations are occurring. I never found anything that was dangerous or worth avoiding, though, I stuck mainly to the downtown and more suburban areas of the city. Definitely visit the River Walk area and, if possible, get out to as much of the city during the various festivals and parties as possible.

San Antonio is a pretty laid-back city, with lots of Sunday drivers and people who just aren’t in a hurry to get anywhere. Tourists are known to take over certain areas of their own, depending on the location and time of year. People in San Antonio have two favorite past-times: eating and drinking. With a higher percentage of restaurants than any other business in the city (I would assume, anyway), people are constantly going out to eat. Then, post-dinner social plans generally involve drinking, whether it is margaritas at yet another restaurant, one of the many unique bars, or at a club. So basically, the atmosphere is one of a group of people who are lazy and like to eat and drink—it’s very Bacchanalian.

This is kind of a hick town in a big city. There are clubs and things, and of course, there are malls and the River Walk, but not as many natives go there because it’s so touristy. For the most part, the energy off campus is very subdued.
