College Prowler Take
The first year at Trinity can be so busy that many freshmen do not get the chance to fully appreciate everything that San Antonio has to offer. They spend a lot of time hopping around to the different frat parties and getting their bearings on campus. However, when the Trinity routine starts to become a little old, friendships will have formed, and students can start hitching rides with one another to get out and see what kind of nightlife the city has to offer. Most of the better clubs will allow minors in, although the cover charge will likely be higher for them. The Bonham and the Bombay Bicycle Club are great for club dancing, but they are strict about ID checks, so don’t try using a fake one. It’s pretty easy to find concerts featuring either big-name or local bands almost every night, and the White Rabbit, which is a block away from campus, often showcases the talents of many Trinity bands. Anyone can go to a house party, regardless of age. However, these are not good places to go if you don’t know anyone there, since most of the people there will know each other, at least in some small degree, and it can be somewhat exclusive. Most of the students are not unfriendly, but they are not going to be as welcoming at a party until they get to know you in a different setting. However, because it is such a small school, before long, you will feel as though you know everyone. When you’ve been at school a while and start to meet more classmates, house parties can be the best places to have a good time, but until then, there are plenty of clubs and concerts where you can mix and mingle.

It doesn’t always seem like there’s a place for non-drinkers on or off campus, but if you look around into some of the campus clubs, you can usually find people who want to do something like play broomball or laser tag, so it’s not really a big deal. |

With the parties, it depends on who is throwing them. I’ve never been in trouble at any of them. There is drinking, but at the same time, everyone is looking out for everyone else. You will get drunk if you want to, but you won’t be allowed to drive home or get alcohol poisoning. As far as stuff off campus, I didn’t really go much. I went to the Bonham once, and it seemed to be pretty good. For the most part, I’m not really a clubber. |

There is always a party to be...
There is always a party to be found on weekends and most weekdays. Dorm parties are usually pretty small get-togethers, though. I don’t know much about bars around campus, but there are clubs for every interest. |

Parties on campus are rather crappy, unless you enjoy frat parties—at least, that was my experience. Swig downtown is pretty cool—it feels classy like you’re in a big, sophisticated city like New York. |

The parties on campus are fine,...
The parties on campus are fine, despite attempts to enforce the rules with excessive force. The bars and clubs off campus are great, especially since we are near so many of them. For nice bars, try Arriba (rich Mexican bar, but classy to go to even if you’re not Hispanic), Bonham (huge gay club downtown-fun for straight or gay because of its spectacular scale and architecture), Heat (gay club with good drag shows), the Mix (straight bar with sleazy people near campus), Communion (the best club, some Goth, the best live music in town), Petti Coat Junction (lesbian honky-tonk, but fun for anybody). |

The nightclubs in San Antonio can be very scary places if you go alone, so plan on heading out with a group of friends. The gay clubs are the most fun places to dance, but if you’re in a group, any club can be a good time. Here are the most entertaining clubs to frequent.
Bar Prowler
When Trinity students get tired of watching some random frat guy drink his sixth beer bong of the hour, they can hit up the bars. Here are some of the more popular ones in San Antonio.
Organization Parties
If you want to go to a club party thrown by an organization at Trinity, either be a member of the club or date someone who is. Clubs rent out hotel lobbies and sometimes nightclubs, and throw great parties, but they’re usually more fun when you know the people who are throwing it.
Club Listings
A great dance club, and the best place in San Antonio to catch a drag show. The Saint is one of the most popular clubs on a street that is the main drag for the gay and lesbian nightclubs in town. There are two dance floors and plenty of room at the bar, with specials randomly offered throughout the night. Along with the Bonham, although it is primarily a gay club, straight college kids and adults hit up the club because of the great dance music and atmosphere. The Saint 1430 N Main Ave. (210) 225-7330
For people who never really got over their love of ‘80s music, this is a perfect club. It is three stories high, starting on the River Walk level. Each story features a different decade of music, from the ‘70s to the ‘80s, and finishing on the third floor with the ‘90s. Drink specials vary throughout the night, but since the club is located on the River Walk, the drinks are going to be expensive regardless. Polly Esther’s Danceplex 212 College St. (210) 220-1972
Sin 13 sounds like the name of a cliché Goth rock band. While the name might be off-putting, don’t let it fool you. This club houses some of the best live alternative shows in San Antonio, and people under 18 can get in, too. There’s a casual dress code, and they have happy hour from 4–7 p.m., but the cover to shows can vary depending on who’s playing and what they want to charge. If you love live music and a place to meet other people who like to rock, this is definitely a place to check out. Sin 13 1902 McCullough (210) 320-6859
The Bonham is a great place to go on a Friday night. While it is primarily a gay club, there is an amiable mix of gay and straight people who all want to dance to the music, which is anything from techno and hip-hop to house and R&B music. There are three bars in the building, two dance floors, and a few thong-clad dancers to boot. The drinks are not expensive, but prepare to want more than one; the more crowded it gets, the harder you’re going to have to fight to get a drink. It’s cheaper to get in when you’re 21, but as long as you’re over 18, you can go. They do check IDs pretty thoroughly at the door, so don’t bother trying to sneak in if you’re underage. Bonham Exchange 411 Bonham St. Downtown (210) 271-3811
This is the place to be if you love to country dance, or even if the closest thing you’ve ever done a line dance to is the “Electric Slide.” It gets packed, and Wednesdays are especially popular since students get in at a discounted rate on those nights. There’s even a mechanical bull. And since you’re in a country-western club, you might want to wear something a little nicer than just a T-shirt. Cowboys Dance Hall 3030 NE Loop 410 (210) 646-9378

Beer drinkers of the world, rejoice. If this bar does not have the drink that you seek, then that beer only ever existed in your own drunken mind. It’s more of an upscale bar, but they have 80 beers on tap and over 150 brands from around the world. No aliens here, just the best chance in San Antonio of finding the perfect beer. The Flying Saucer 11255 Huebner Rd. (210) 696-5080
Flats has live music of all kinds (jazz, blues, rock, reggae), and you rarely have to pay a cover to see the bands. There’s also a giant sandbox out back for the kids to play in. Kingston Tycoon Flats 2926 N St. Mary’s (210) 737-1929
Howl at the Moon is a piano bar that encourages audience participation. Some pianists duel with music and insults, and almost all of them love to get rowdy attention from the audience, rather than quiet clapping and a few tips. This is the place to visit if you’re a music lover, or just like to make some noise. Howl at the Moon 111 W Crockett St. (210) 212-4695
There are no bicycles involved with this bar, only great burgers and a fun atmosphere. Its proximity to Trinity and the inviting interior have made it a Trinity tradition. It is not the cheapest bar in the city, but it’s still cheaper than drinking on the River Walk. Technically, this bar is within walking distance of Trinity, but since almost every student has his or her own car, you can see that the bar is hopping by simply looking at the parking lot. Bombay Bicycle Club 3506 N St. Mary’s (210) 737-2411
This bar, also the largest humidor downtown, offers a view of the River Walk that you can enjoy while smoking, drinking, or listening to jazz music. This is definitely more upscale than an average college bar, so be prepared to tuck in your shirt, or wear something with sleeves. Swig is also a fabulous date spot. Swig Martini Bar 111 W Crockett St. (210) 476-0005
This small lesbian bar is set in a somewhat unfriendly neighborhood, but inside the atmosphere is much friendlier than the one outside. There is a full bar, a small dance floor, and the usual bar amenities—a pool table, air hockey, and even darts. Far from usual, though, is the singing bartender. She paid for her own head microphone so that she could sing and serve drinks at the same time on Wednesday, which is karaoke night. Bermuda Triangle 119 El Mio (210) 342-2276
What to Do if You're Not 21
Housed in an old train station, Sunset Station is a converted nightclub that features four different bars. Club nights are 21 and up, but concerts are for all ages. Sunset Station 1174 E Commerce St. (210) 222-9481
This comedy club, located next to the Rivercenter Mall, admits those who are 18 and older or 17 with a parent. It’s not difficult to get tickets to a show, but it’s a good idea to call and reserve them in advance, since show times vary. Rivercenter Comedy Club 849 E Commerce St. (210) 229-9233
