College Prowler Take
There are lots of places to live off campus, including some very nice apartments within walking distance of campus. Of course, living off campus means sacrificing a cleaning service and a maintenance crew. Living away from the University can seem cheaper, but unexpected expenses tend to make the cost of living off campus pretty close to that of staying at Trinity. One of the biggest problems with living away from the school is that you become much more removed from the action. Students who live off campus seem to socialize less and miss out on the more spontaneous on-campus activities. However, being in the “real world” does mean gaining the experience of living alone, and affords much more privacy than living in the dorms. Finding a roommate to share a house or apartment with is a good idea, as it makes renting cheaper, but it isn’t necessary to do so. Students who live off campus also have the luxury of being able to throw bigger, louder parties, but they also bear the responsibility of kicking people out of their apartment or house at the end of the night, rather than letting campus security do the job for them. Living off campus can be a positive or a negative experience for anyone who tries it. The best bet is to find out about different locations from the people who have already lived there, and becoming aware of the pros and cons of moving before leaving the blissful safety of the Trinity campus.

By senior year, students are...
By senior year, students are allowed to move off campus. There are many options that students can pursue; most of them are very convenient. Many houses and duplexes are available for great prices along the West and Northwest edge of the University. Small apartment complexes exist immediately along Trinity’s north and northwest border. All of these options are within walking distance of campus—some of them are even closer than the dorms themselves. Competition for this housing is high, but with students graduating every year, the turnover rate is fast enough that it is rare for a student not to be able to find something. A five- to eight-minute drive from campus resides more good options. North on 281 behind the Quarry are four apartment complexes that are new and affordable. Apartments to watch out for are the houses and apartments located east of campus. This area is not especially safe, and while the rent is low, many residents can lose their savings because of theft. |

As far as I know, only seniors and some juniors are allowed to live off campus without special permission. I recommend it, though, when you have the opportunity. I live off campus in the Marquis on Treeline Park, and I prefer it over the dorms. |

I lived on campus for four years and never had a problem with it. I had some pretty cool RAs, except the one who tried to bust me for burning incense. However, being close to almost all of my friends made the experience completely worthwhile. |

At Trinity, you have to live on campus for the first three years. After the first three, it is fairly easy to find apartments right around the Trinity area. The dorms at Trinity are very expensive, especially while living in San Antonio where the cost of living is one of the lowest in the country. Most of my friends saved hundreds of dollars by living off campus. |

Moving off campus is definitely...
Moving off campus is definitely worth it. Sure, you don’t get the maid service every other week, but there are so many perks. For one thing, you have your own kitchen, so you can escape Aramark food (which is especially good for vegetarians). You can get your own bedroom, so you can avoid being ‘sexiled’ by your roommate(s). You don’t have to worry about hiding liquor, candles, or anything else not allowed on campus, as RAs don’t just stop on by whenever they feel like it. So yes, it is definitely worth it. |
