Every undergraduate who is willing to shell out the $75 for a year’s permit will receive it. This does not necessarily guarantee good parking, but you should be able to find somewhere to put your car.

College Prowler Take

Because San Antonio public transportation is not very convenient, it is a good idea to bring a car to school. Unfortunately, too many students feel this way, and not enough of them believe in carpooling, so there are usually more cars than there are convenient parking spaces. Parking permits are relatively cheap, and there is usually enough parking on campus, but it might not be close to where you live or where you need to be. Students with cars should get used to finding a spot somewhere and walking the rest of the distance.

Parking is always worse during the second semester of each school year when students drive up with their new motorized Christmas presents. Too many people refuse to park in the Prassel garage, because it is far away from everything unless you live in Prassel Hall. As a result, you can sometimes see students desperately circling the McLean parking lot at 3 a.m. in the vain hope that at any moment someone is going to move their car and there will be a vacant spot. You will normally see these same students still circling the parking lot as you walk to class at 8 a.m. the next morning. In other words, parking is doable here, just remember to bring your walking shoes for the imminent trek to clases that most certainly awaits.

Parking has become cramped, but they are addressing it. It is a real luxury to be able to park near all of the school facilities, unlike at the bigger schools. Everything is within walking distance, so you can really park anywhere and easily get to where you need to be—it’s very convenient.

Here’s the deal with parking: there will always be a free spot somewhere on campus for you to park. However, students will not always find the most convenient spot. The freshman dorms are all on the east side of lower campus, immediately next to the major dining hall, and all of the upperclassman dorms are on the west side of campus. When dinner rolls around, many upperclassmen are too lazy to make the five-minute walk to the dining hall. So, instead, they take a four-minute drive and park next to the dining hall in what are intended to be the freshman parking spots.

Parking on campus requires a permit, which can be purchased for as little as $65–$75 per year. Students without a permit will definitely get more than five tickets over the course of a year (they figure out the ‘I’m a visitor’ trick rather quickly), so don’t risk it.

Last-ditch parking options include Alamo Stadium (a very large parking lot across the street from Trinity’s east edge), Upper campus parking (located north of the library), and the lesser-known admissions parking lot (located on the south corner of campus).

Parking sucks, especially on lower campus, and on upper campus, too, whenever there is an event at Laurie Auditorium or Alamo Stadium. This year, they issued more permits than there were parking spaces. If you live off campus, be sure you leave home early enough to allow time to find a parking lot.
