College Prowler Take

The main downside to San Antonio is that there are no true seasons. In the fall it rains, in the winter it gets below 80 degrees, in the spring it rains a lot, and in the summer, you wish that it was raining so that you could cool off. One way to tell the season is to look down—if there are lots of soggy leaves, it is fall. If it is just soggy, it is more than likely spring. San Antonians are incapable of dealing with inclement weather. If ice is present on the roads, the city will shut down until the ice recedes—classes will be cancelled.

The fact that Trinity floods at least once a year can be considered a blessing. It’s a lot of fun to head to the football field and go mudsliding (running and jumping into the water and sliding across the field, like a rainy slip n’ slide). Since it
is really hot most of the year, students have more reasons to use the outdoor pool, and wardrobe costs are pretty low—
T-shirts and shorts really don’t have to be that expensive to be considered “fashion savvy.” The rainy spring does make you more appreciative of the summer, because students have the freedom to get out in the sun, lounge in the grass, and put their jackets into storage until next winter.

It’s hot, hot, hot during the summer, and cold and wet during the winter. Oh, and it’s humid all year round.

Weather in San Antonio can best be described as deathly hot in the summer, and generally nice for the rest of the year. The beautiful part about being a college student in San Antonio is that you get all of the beautiful and none of the deathly hot. Upon arrival in late August it will still be very warm, so shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops, skirts, and even bikini tops are not a rare sight around campus. As the year progresses, jeans and khakis become more prevalent, though flip-flops are appropriate year-round. San Antonio will get a freeze or two every year, but things like hail, snow, and ice are extreme rarities. San Antonio receives a decent amount of precipitation, but is able to avoid the horrid humidity of nearby Houston. As the saying goes, when it rains, it pours. The rest of the time, expect mostly sunny skies and the type of weather that drives meteorologists into a lethargic trance.

It’s Texas, so bring something for every kind of climate you can imagine, because you might need them all in the span of one day.

The weather ranges from 90–100 degrees in the summer to 15–25 degrees in the winter. If you plan on shipping your clothes to campus after you arrive, make sure you pack shorts and light colored T-shirts for the hot weather, and also have a long-sleeved shirt or light jacket available, since the classrooms are kept cold. The temperature starts dropping in mid to late October, and December to early February are the coldest months. Even in the winter, make sure you have a pair of shorts for the occasional 80 degree day. I am from north-central Texas, so the biggest weather-related adjustment I had was to the several days of misting per year. Sometimes San Antonio will have dry heat, but more often than not, it’s on the humid side. Drainage on campus is not the best, so make sure you have some waterproof sandals and a handy umbrella for when it rains.
