Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

If you ask a Truman student why he or she is at Truman, as opposed to a different college, chances are you’ll hear, “It was the money.” For in-state kids, Truman is a fabulous deal, especially because the school gives out so many scholarships. When push comes to shove, that’s why a majority of students initially enroll. But however majestic the buildings are, how impressive and wonderful the professors are, or how many scholarships are awarded, it’s the other students who make or break the college experience. Truman students are a pretty motivated, involved, and accepting bunch of people.

If you choose Truman, be prepared to delve whole-heartedly into college life because there’s not much to do outside of the University. But there is always something to do on campus: movie nights, plays, concerts, karaoke, lectures, and demonstrations for every interest under the sun. A lot of colleges claim to be involved in student life, but Truman definitely makes good on its own assertion. While many people scorn finances as a top reason to choose a school (and perhaps they’re right on principal), it makes life a lot more comfortable to be able to afford dinners in restaurants, laundry, and printer ink while receiving a top-notch education. If you want to be a famous lawyer, by all means, look at Harvard. If you want to make it big in the music business, you’ll obviously consider Berklee or the UMKC Conservatory. But you have just as high of a chance at achieving anything you want with a diploma from Truman State University, an opinion received from both employers and graduate schools alike. Truman fosters a sense of responsibility, real companionship, and a thirst for excellence that you won’t find in more pretentious institutions.

Make the Grade

Test scores, test scores, and oh yeah. Test scores. Act is the big one here. Take it at least twice. I raised mine by 4 points just by familiarizing myself with the process. And the second testing environment was not as far away and there was also a more comfortable setting. Make sure you take your writing seriously. There is no slouching when it comes to expressing oneself in words. In fact written communication is one of the most highly stressed aspects of the entire curriculum. No matter what major you intend. So take the entrance essay very seriously. Do not just dash off what you think that might like and not be concerned with that ring of sincerity. I can attest that the essays that are written from true and honest experience and expectation are the most highly favored and Truman does not, by any means, have an open enrollment policy. Best of luck.

Awesome

As Missouri's premier liberal arts and sciences institution there is no better education for the buck. Professors are of the higher caliber and they usually have time to get to know any who want to be known and even some who don't. There are a fair number of Over Achievers in both sexes. Track I've found is to do the best that I an and only person I am in competition with is myself. It is a fairly small campus so it is hard to get lost in the mix. It is also a small town so it's kinda hard to get away. But there is Thousand Hills State Park which is a blessing from heaven if you can get out to it. A little ways outside of town but lots of students go there so usually able to catch a ride and even if you were to get "accidentally" left it isn't that far of a hike. Scenery and ability to get off to yourself is worth it. And it is not too far to bike for those who aren't faint of heart. Pagliai's Pizza is a great local tradition with the Ronza's taking the prize for affordability and portion size. Great place to go and park oneself for extended time to study or just hang out. It is truly an exceptional find in the heart of the Mid-West.

Small Town but Not Hicks

Most landlords in Kirksville are decent and some are even excellent. Then there are some that are down right scam artists when it comes to deposits and even damages if apartment not checked out by both parties upon leaving. There are a large variety, but most tend toward the small town living. Some big houses that will hold 5 or 6 people comfortably and then the regular two and three bedroom deals. Some, if you are lucky, are in the older homes in town. Usually this means higher utility bills but in Kirksville most have the utilities included in the rent. And since Kirksville is known as the icebox of Missouri it is great to have that set amount covered ahead of time and no surprise heating bills that can leave you eating Ramen and PBJ for the next month.
