Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Writing papers on weekends here is not only acceptable—it’s the standard. The dorm lounges are full of people studying on Saturday nights (and socializing at the same time). Truman students are nothing if not hard working and for good reason: The amount of a student’s financial aid package drops substantially after freshman year, if he or she receives anything less than a 3.25. Also, many undergraduates here have double majors, especially if they bring transfer credits from high school.

Truman professors make accessibility a priority. Regular office hours are required, and dinner parties at professors’ homes are not uncommon. If a student here makes the effort to attend class and get involved, he or she can depend on graduating with not only a slew of heartfelt recommendations, but also a few close professor friends. Any teacher willing to pack up and move to Kirksville—home of a Super Wal-Mart, a bunch of meth farmers, and that’s pretty much it—has to be either dedicated to education or desperate for a job. With Truman’s academic reputation on a rapid rise, it’s more than likely the former. Classes at Truman are small, and discussions abound. Academics are not just a background against which to enjoy the weekends, and it shows. All in all, the courses here are Truman’s strongest asset, and the students who benefit from them will surely agree.

Great Academics

In the Political Science department I cannot stress enough how amazing the professors are. They care a lot about their jobs and love teaching. They are very knowledgeable but are also accessible and willing to talk to students about anything. There is not one bad professor in the whole department which is incredible. If your up for a challenge and want to learn a lot take Political Science at Truman State University.

Academic Pride... Yeah, OK

Truman pretty much prides itself on being a school for smart kids. This is true. Do not debase the intelligence of that football guy or sorority girl- they probably get better grades than you. As a pre-education math major, the classes aren't bad, and neither are the professors. You will probably find yourself taking 5 or 6 classes a semester. When I went into this major, I was told that Truman has a job placement (for my major and profession) of 100%. Let's hope that holds.

Hard, Great Support and Rewards

Truman students are often highly sought after for graduate programs. I know firsthand how hard being a TSU undergrad in some programs can be, but grad schools respect that! And there's always a great support system

Did You Know?
  • On some evenings during finals week, the dormitory dining halls offer doughnuts, ice cream, and other sugary refreshments at midnight.
  • Former University president W. Jack Magruder called Truman the "Harvard of the Midwest." The name stuck, and students have been making fun of it ever since.
  • Students who want to take more than 17 credit hours will have to pay for it. Anything more than that is considered an "overload," and it costs more than $230 for each additional hour, which is why advisers encourage students to write out a four-year plan.
