Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Meals at Truman are something you learn to deal with. If you are used to eating lunch at 2 p.m., you will learn to grab a quick bite at 11 a.m. so you’ll be hungry again at 5:30 p.m., when everyone else is going to dinner. The hours are confusing, especially right before holidays. But when they are open, the dining halls are really quite a deal—the equivalent of $3 taken from your account buys all-you-can-eat soup, salad, sandwiches, waffles, dessert, and a variety of entrées during every meal. Plus, the staff is always cheerful, helpful, and friendly. Food at Truman isn’t always the healthiest, but there are always vegan options.

A meal plan consists of three options: 210 meals and 50 dining dollars, 165 meals and 100 dining dollars, or 140 meals and 150 dining dollars. The meals are the only currency good in the dining halls, but they can also be used at the SUB restaurants. For example, if you choose chicken tenders and fries at the Sky Ranch Grill, which runs about $4.89, you’ll spend one meal ($3) and $1.89 in dining dollars. The lack of 24-hour dining facilities is inconvenient, but students stock up on late-night munchies for studying. Plus, with the off-campus dining nearly as limited in selection as on-campus establishments, students mostly resign themselves to becoming a little less choosy.

Decent

Nothings ever that great, but there is a decent selection and the Mainstreet Market in the Student Union helps to break up the repetitiveness of the dining halls.

Cheap Options!

When the dining hall food starts to get old, Truman gives their students an option called "dining dollars." We start with $50 dining dollars and we can use them anywhere around campus, in town, or in the convenience stores in our dorms. It works like a debit card, and is nice when we want to switch things up. If we spend enough money in our convenience stores they will count it as a meal plan, which is nice when we want something new and different to heat up when we're too lazy to walk to a dining hall!

Sudexo Sucks

I very much dislike the dining halls on campus. The food is done by Sudexo and is never very good. My freshman year, I got food poisoning from one of the halls. The Student Union Building has a better variety but it is expensive for those who live off campus.

Did You Know?

The dining halls are such a good deal that local businesspeople hold lunchtime meetings there all the time.

At the beginning of each year, each resident hall student is provided a 16-ounce reusable mug, called a T-Mug. It can be brought into the dining hall, filled with a beverage, and carried out. The T-Mug is the only reusable container allowed into the resident hall dining room. If lost or damaged, replacements may be purchased for $2.25 each.

Sodexo, the company that runs Truman’s food services, will deliver cakes, cookies, fruit baskets, and coupons for free food to your room on your birthday starting at only $12.50.

If you are ill and cannot visit the dining room, a sick tray can be provided by obtaining a form from a student adviser.

Students can arrange to get a sack lunch if class schedules or work schedules conflict with meal periods.
