Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Having your own computer is great—you can check e-mails, chat on an instant messenger, and type last-minute homework as soon as you return from various classes and meetings. It makes electronic communication incredibly effective, especially since it seems that professors and staff members reply to e-mail requests much more quickly than phone messages. Plus, many teachers e-mail assignments, so you’d best be checking your Truman account often. Blackboard, another feature accessible with your Truman e-mail password, is an Internet-based storage space where some teachers put assignments, grades, and class discussion boards.

The on-campus network is speedy but a little frustrating from time to time. It’s moody and occasionally won’t allow access for 15 or 20 minutes when it gets into a snit. On the other hand, you can access LexisNexis and EBSCOHost databases , which are two great resources for reading and citing millions of journal articles, studies, and court cases. While most students agree that bringing a computer is not required, it definitely will save you long, exasperating evenings at a PC you’re not familiar with. ITS can assist students with buying computers, but whatever the cost, it will be a smart, time-saving investment.

On campus computers are frequent and work relatively well. Internet is fast and printing is in every dorm as well as the library and other labs around campus.

I really only use my personal laptop but even that is a pain because the wireless in my room is so poor that I have to use a cord to get internet. We do have a small computer lab on every floor of the dorms, which is very convenient.

Network is painfully slow. Wireless internet is slow and flips on and off all day long. Printers are provided but sometimes break. Campus computers take forever to turn on so if you're in a hurry you are in trouble.
