Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The pretty campus is routinely one of the deciding factors for prospective students, according to Truman’s admissions office. The campus may be small, but picturesque brick buildings and majestic, shady trees give the University a grander, almost Ivy-League feel, particularly Violette Hall, which is covered in red ivy in the fall. Truman tries hard to match the insides of campus buildings with the natural atmosphere.

Most students agree that the athletic facilities are far from great, but as Truman’s Division II football team is rarely at the top of its division, it’s easy to see that athletics are not the focus here. Conversely, the rec center is new and very convenient. It has a track, soccer/hockey rink, volleyball, basketball, and badminton courts, dozens of exercise machines, and a state-of-the-art weight room. Students eat, study, gossip, play arcade games and billiards, and participate in activities at the Student Union Building (SUB). Truman recently renovated its science building, Magruder Hall, which features almost 50 high-tech biology and chemistry labs, as well as new classrooms and faculty offices. Like most universities, Truman’s facilities could always stand to be better, but for the price, everything is relatively effective and in good condition.

Generally Pretty up-To-Date

Truman was a campus built a long time ago, and some of the buildings show it. Baldwin, for example, is rather old (and smells like it). Many of the buildings on campus have recently been renovated, such as Ryle Hall, Violette, etc. The library is a very aesthetically pleasing place - largely because, in order to expand, they build a building AROUND the whole library. So you can see where the outside used to be, while in the inside (hard to describe). Some of the books could be updated there, though.

Kitchens Galore!

On each floor we have a kitchen that everyone is welcome to use, as well as a convenience store on the first floor. Complete with all the appliances used at home, students are able to bake when they're stressed, or prepare the home-cooked meal they miss so much! The convenient store on the first floor has everything from fruit, to pasta, to PB&J sandwhiches so we can all have a little taste of home!

Favorite Things To Do

It’s common to meet friends for coffee at Jazzman’s or take up a game of volleyball at the rec. Movies, bowling, and beer are all off-campus activities, but on campus you’ll find everything from Hebrew Read-A-Thons and physics colloquiums in the SUB activities room to theater productions in the Ophelia Parrish Black Box Theatre. The most you’ll pay for a play, homecoming event, dance recital, or a cappella concert is a whopping $2.

On a stroll through the campus, you’ll see impromptu games of Frisbee, students holding coffee cups from Jazzman’s, goggled artists throwing pots outside the ceramics building, and a gaggle of people of all ages carrying tennis shoes, heading to and from the Student Recreation Center.
