College Prowler Take

For students who want to get hard-core involved in Greek activities and who’ve dreamed of their own (more mature) sequel to Animal House, it’s definitely possible at Truman. Although dues can run in the hundreds of dollars, the Greek structure provides a unique opportunity for leadership and service, and most members take their responsibilities to uphold the name of their organization seriously. On the other hand, if schmoozy rush events and semi-formals aren’t your style, you can completely ignore the Greek world, and there’s no reason you’ll be short on friends or entertainment.

Rush and bid processes are very traditional, and yes, there are girls sobbing because their invitations never came. Some frats require very little during the pledge season—no more than minor inconveniences such as sober-driving duty—and others will have pledges up all night, every night. Since there is basically no city in which to escape, weekends are peppered with frat parties. The alcohol is usually plentiful and cheap, and girls are encouraged to come whether they’re Greek or not. Some students stay away from frats altogether, preferring to chill with a group of friends. But whether you’re involved or not, you’ll have the entire Greek alphabet memorized by graduation.

Due to a complete lack of a city scene, the frats are the definite runner-up. The Greek school-sponsored activities are half on. When they are good, they are excellent; when they are bad, they are horrible and nobody shows up. However, on any given weekend, you can expect a good deal of hormone-driven college students about as diverse as a bag of peanuts drunk beyond the point of common sense. This will almost exclusively be happening at a local fraternity chapter.

It doesn’t really dominate the social scene. It’s more like an ever-present headache.

Greek life is great for those who want to drink and party and be assured of having at least a hundred people or so to hang out with at any given time.

I have lots of friends who are Greek, but I also have lots of friends who aren’t Greek. I don’t think most Greeks look down on anyone who isn’t Greek. It’s just kind of something you can do if you want, and if you don’t want to be Greek, then that’s cool, too. However, the Greek fraternities do throw most of the parties, and it’s hard for guys to get into parties if they’re not part of one.
