Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you are looking for museums or big-city sports teams, you’re not going to find them in Kirksville, so it is a testament to the University that so many students choose Truman. Nearly any kind of entertainment or nightlife you’ll find is on campus. In fact, Truman was recently rated No. 8 in the country by the Princeton Review for most stuff to do on campus. The city of Kirksville is sleepy, which makes it a great escape from the hustle of campus life. Spend a Saturday wandering through the shops on the square, particularly when the farmers’ market is held, and you’ll find delicious and cheap fresh jams and Amish cinnamon rolls. It’s very hard to get lost in Kirksville, and besides waiting at the three downtown stoplights, which begin flashing red at 8 p.m., there is never traffic.

The residents are friendly, although Truman students admittedly do not interact with them often. Kirksville sponsors the Round Barn Blues Festival and an arts and crafts fair annually, which are don’t-miss events. Spend time at Thousand Hills State Park—the scenery is breathtaking, and hosting a barbecue with friends is a perfect way to while away a Sunday afternoon. Since many students come from cities like St. Louis and Kansas City, they assume Kirksville will be something of a cross to bear. Instead, most find they never miss a thing.

Secluded TTS Syndrome

Kirksville's only attractions are the Thousand Hills State Park, an average movie theater, Walmart, a small JC Penny, and some antique shops. Of course, there's always parties, but Typical Truman Student syndrome will start kicking in because of two reasons: Kirksville is super secluded and Truman students are usually too busy studying. The only thing to look forward to is weekends and breaks, so we can get the hell out of Kirksville.

Kirksville - the Littlest Big Town Ever

I, like many people looking at Truman State, was hesitant about the town of Kirksville. What I didn't realize was just how large it actually is. There's a large movie theatre, a super Wal-Mart, every fast food chain you could think of (except Jack-in-the-Box unfortunately), and the town people are super friendly. You can walk to most of the places, and you'll find that you'll largely be on campus anyways, since there's so much to do.

Absolutely love the town - it might not have huge shopping malls, or exciting night clubs, but that's not what college is for. There's plenty of fraternity parties to spark your interest.

Not the Funnest Place to Be

Truman itself puts on loads of events throughout the semester that are fun and interesting and often educational. Kirksville, however, provides little to no entertainment with one movie theater and only one fair all year that I attend. They do have a great all you can drink night on Thursday nights, though. Besides what I mentioned and a few measly restaurants, Kirksville is downright dull.
