Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Kirksville is an excellent place for students to get their feet wet before the dive into complete independence, and rent will never run them dry. It’s very uncommon for off-campus undergraduates to live alone, and one person’s share of rent (including utilities) is almost never more than $275. There isn’t too much luxury here, but most apartments are fairly new, with working facilities and not a whole lot of wear and tear. If a student chooses a house, the range is a little broader. Crickety porches and peeling paint are not uncommon, but as long as they’re still standing, they’re a pretty good investment.

If you are awarded a room-and-board scholarship, living on campus is obviously free, but if you choose to move, the University will give a per-semester stipend. However, remember that the freedom that an apartment allows is curbed by the responsibility of grocery shopping, cooking your own meals, and cleaning. However, since Truman is a dry campus, a house or apartment is the way to go if you want to throw parties. It’s very important to thoroughly check out the fine print of the contract and the real condition of facilities before you sign anything. Don’t let a smooth-talking landlord fool you into accepting a dripping faucet or a 12-month deal that will force you to pay while you’re home for the summer.

Don't Let Reslife Fool You, Its Cheaper Than on Campus

I figured my on-campus and off-campus living expenses for next year, and moving off campus will end up saving me approximately $1,400 for the year. This includes all the utilities and food expenses for the house I'll be renting.

There are all kinds of decently priced houses and apartments to rent near campus. Naturally, some are nicer than others, and some are closer to campus than others, but I have not come across any terrible places.

Small Apartments, Small Price

Many of the apartments in the area are rather small however larger than a dorm. Though the difference is that the price is not so large either, often it extends to only a $300 - $500 per month price range.
