Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Travel books always suggest packing lightly when going places, but the opposite is true if you come to Truman. The winters routinely bring temperatures close to zero, while the summers top 90 degrees. What’s more, there is no gradual change from warm to cool in spring and fall. Instead, a week can see temperatures hit anywhere within a 30-degree range. You know that winter is near when the mercury stops leaping back to 80 degrees. There are distinct seasons, which you can see in the trees: bursts of dogwood in the spring and bright red foliage in the fall.

The wind almost never stops. Definitely bring hoodies and hats, because regardless of the temperature, a short walk across campus can leave you with stinging ears. Most will advise students to keep an umbrella close by, as it rains regularly. It also snows often, especially in January and February, and if you are from a metropolis south of Truman, the drifting flakes are a wonderful surprise. Kirksville is also home to some of the best packing snow, so late-night snowball fights and sledding down the hill in front of Centennial are impromptu musts. When the forecast is bad but the day looks beautiful, don’t be deceived. Layers are every student’s best bet because while it might be snowing outside, the classrooms will be stifling.

Prepare for It!

Bring rainboots and umbrellas.

Bring snowboots and gloves.

Once it starts snowing it generally doesn't stop until about April. So be ready for that.

But when its nice, its GORGEOUS.

Too Cold

Here in Kirksville, Missouri, it snows way to much. Some of my classes are far away and it's a pain to walk.

Snows a Lot.

There is a lot of snow in the winter and it sticks around all winter long. However Kirksville does have beautiful spring days and a fairly mild to warm summer. Those nice spring days are wonderful after a long cold winter.
