College Prowler Take

The University certainly doesn’t own any kind of athletic bragging rights over any other schools, which is why those who believe sports are the essence of college have probably never heard of Tufts. A little known fact, though, is that the first American college football game took place between Tufts and Harvard. Tufts has a long-standing tradition of athletics, but most students find that school spirit is not focused around sports at all.

Tufts does have a couple of pretty good teams, and the competition in the NESCAC keeps things interesting. When a team is doing well, Tufts students will support it. Intramurals and club sports are popular, and the gym is always crowded—it’s not that Tufts students are not athletic—they are just content to enjoy sports for the fun of the game, and are not looking for all the fanfare you might find at some larger state schools.

A lot of people are on teams, but they don’t really have followings. Our football team sucks, but Tufts sailing is the best sailing team ever. We’ve won more championships in our sailing history than any other school. We have a bunch of club sports that compete close to varsity level. Intramurals are really just a bunch of friends who are on a team.

Sports? Tufts has sports teams? Oh! That’s what they were doing on that field! No, seriously, the best sports at Tufts are the club sports, like skiing and ultimate Frisbee. They mesh well with the college lifestyle and are a lot of fun—competitive, without cramping your style. If you are big into varsity athletics, just be prepared to not have too many fans at the games.

The teams are competitive, but school spirit is low. It’s one of Tufts’s biggest flaws. The IM teams are pretty popular, though, since most people do not want to commit to varsity or could not make the team or get enough playing time.

Varsity sports, depending on which, are big on campus. I think the biggest ones are track, soccer, softball, crew, and sailing. Those teams have recently won championships at a national level, and are really popular. I was going to play varsity lacrosse, but it’s a lot of work to be juggling hard courses, two jobs, and a social life.

Other than Homecoming and the Naked Quad Run (which is what it sounds like), there really isn’t much school spirit at Tufts. I wish there was more of it because the people are really great, and the athletes are very talented. IM sports are pretty big, but you have to be organized about it, or things just slip.

Gyms and Facilities

  • Ames Human Performance Center - Ames is a physical performance center located in Cousens Gym for Tuft’s athletes, as well as other students. The facility was recently updated with new equiptment, including two circuits of Cybex machines, many aerobic machines, strength equipment, and free-weights. The facility also has a full-time strength and conditioning specialist as well as a sports medicine staff.
  • Cousens Gym - Cousens is the largest gym on campus. The Cage has practice basketball and volleyball courts, and a batting cage. There are a number of other basketball courts throughout the building. Hamilton Pool, a sauna, squash courts, and the Lunder Fitness Center (with weights and exercise machines) are also located here. The Fitness Center gets crowded at night, and in January and February after everyone has made New Year’s resolutions. The best time to go is in the morning.
  • Gantcher Center - The Gantcher Center is brand new and state-of-the art. It has six indoor tennis courts, and an indoor track that the winners of the Boston Marathon trained on. It is often used for really big events like the First Freshman Class Dinner, and speeches by prominent people like Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush.
  • Jackson Gym - The smallest gym on campus, it is mainly home to a few gym classes, but also dance practices and career fairs.
  • Tennis Courts - Outdoor tennis courts are sprinkled throughout the campus. You can use them whenever the tennis team is not using them. Though there are fewer South Hall Courts, generally, there is less of a line than at the Packard Avenue Courts.
