Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University certainly doesn’t own any kind of athletic bragging rights over any other schools, which is why those who believe sports are the essence of college have probably never heard of Tufts. A little known fact, though, is that the first American college football game took place between Tufts and Harvard. Tufts has a long-standing tradition of athletics, but most students find that school spirit is not focused around sports at all.

Tufts does have a couple of pretty good teams, and the competition in the NESCAC keeps things interesting. When a team is doing well, Tufts students will support it. Intramurals and club sports are popular, and the gym is always crowded—it’s not that Tufts students are not athletic—they are just content to enjoy sports for the fun of the game, and are not looking for all the fanfare you might find at some larger state schools.

Apathy

Our school doesn't really care about athletics. Our football team is one of the worst in D3. We actually have very good lacrosse and rugby teams in our division, but it's not a big thing.

We Have a Football Team?

Apparently we do, but our record is one of hilarity.

That being said, we're absolutely awesome at Frisbee, Quidditch, Squash, and Sailing.

School Spirit

Students will go to Homecoming and Parents’ weekend football games, and if a team is doing really well, they will get excited about it; but Tufts school spirit extends further than sports. Despite the name sounding bad at first, almost all Tufts students are proud to be Jumbos. Most Tufts students express an affinity for Jumbo, and could recite the story of how Jumbo came to be Tufts’ mascot, and of the tragic fire that destroyed the real Jumbo. Most students are very happy at Tufts, and proud of their school. In times of tragedy, the campus is able to come together very quickly and support each other as members of a community. No one knows the alma mater except the a cappella groups, and most students could only mutter a few syllables of the fight song, but on Tuftonia’s Day (Tufts’ birthday), everyone celebrates. School spirit is hard to avoid, since the Tufts Spirit Coalition is always cooking up something.
