College Prowler Take
The campus police and RAs don’t enjoy busting people for a couple of beer cans in their dorm room, but if you are stupid about it, and people can hear what is going on in your room from far away, you aren’t really leaving them any choice. When the policies are enforced, they can be quite strict, so once you are on probation, it’s best to be super-careful. The consequences are severe if you get caught doing anything else while on probation. Overall, however, authorities at Tufts are more lenient than many of the colleges in the city. The police and the fraternities have (unofficially) reached a general agreement about how to keep parties safe and under control: Police will usually just sit outside a party to make sure nothing crazy or out-of-hand happens. Students, generally, view the police as harmless, helpful individuals rather than angry and irritated authority figures. The police seem to be more concerned with handing out parking tickets than anything else. Many parties are broken up at 2 a.m., which can put a damper on the night, but the good side to this is that arrests and referrals are uncommon.

The police are pretty serious during the first couple weeks of school about underage drinking, but from then on, no one really cares unless the person is extremely stupid about their habits.

The RAs spread the board...
The RAs spread the board really—some are really strict, and others really don't care at all. The cops will usually write you up for an offense, but once you get sent to the Office of Judicial Affairs, the penalty is usually not that bad.

Tufts police don’t really have too much to do, so they spend their time being annoying with parking tickets. The police will break up parties if people get too rowdy, but they’re generally pretty cool. |

The police are pretty lenient. A lot of the time, they begin busting frat parties when it starts getting late, but you don’t normally get in trouble for drinking if you’re underage, unless you get caught by police drinking outside. Even then, you only get on Probation I, which is only like a warning. The same goes if you are caught smoking pot, but that doesn’t normally happen unless someone complains about it. For Probation II, I think they tell your parents, and then on Probation III, you’re gone. I never got Probation I, and I was caught drinking a few times. |

Police make sure everyone is safe. If you get caught, you aren’t automatically kicked out of school—you just get put on probation, which isn’t a big deal. |
