The campus police and RAs don’t enjoy busting people for a couple of beer cans in their dorm room, but if you are stupid about it, and people can hear what is going on in your room from far away, you aren’t really leaving them any choice. When the policies are enforced, they can be quite strict, so once you are on probation, it’s best to be super-careful. The consequences are severe if you get caught doing anything else while on probation. Overall, however, authorities at Tufts are more lenient than many of the colleges in the city.
The police and the fraternities have (unofficially) reached a general agreement about how to keep parties safe and under control: Police will usually just sit outside a party to make sure nothing crazy or out-of-hand happens. Students, generally, view the police as harmless, helpful individuals rather than angry and irritated authority figures. The police seem to be more concerned with handing out parking tickets than anything else. Many parties are broken up at 2 a.m., which can put a damper on the night, but the good side to this is that arrests and referrals are uncommon.
