College Prowler Take
Tufts is a well-wired campus, and you won't hear students complaining about access to computer labs or the Internet connection from their dorm rooms. A large percentate of Tufts students bring their own computers to campus. There is a huge social element to computers at Tufts, and many students use AOL Instant Messenger for all of their communication needs. There are three main computer labs, in addition to computers in the library, although Eaton is the main computing center with two floors and more than 260 computers. Students enjoy that the lab is open later but are quick to complain about the printing charges. Tufts is not specifically a Mac or a PC campus, and both operating systems are compatible with anything you’ll need for class. The library and the Campus Center have wireless Internet ports as well, so a laptop is probably your best bet if you want to take advantage of portability However, plenty of students choose desktops. While you can certainly survive without one, you’ll be at a social—and potentially academic—disadvantage at Tufts without your own computer.

Campus is not completely wireless, but the library and most academic buildings are on a wireless network that you can access with your laptop and password, and the dorms all have Internet access. The computer lab and libraries also have printers you can access from the network. Pretty much everyone I know has their own computer, but you can get by without one.

At Tufts most students are well-off enough to own their own computer, usually a laptop. As a result, the labs aren't utilized so much, but they have been kept in good shape. I haven't used the Eaton Lab once. Having your own computer is pretty much the standard at Tufts, but it's not required to get your work done. However, we'd probably all be better off without the Internet . . .

It’s more convenient to bring a computer, but you definitely don’t have to. The computer labs only get crowded around finals time, so you can always find one to use, and, in a pinch, you can usually borrow one from a roommate or someone on your hall. It’s nice to have one for IM and e-mail, though. |

I would suggest bringing your own computer. The labs are not really near the dorms, so you have to walk in the snow or rain. But, they usually aren’t that crowded. I’ve never gone there and not been able to sit down immediately. |

Computer access can be problematic at times. The labs are great if you go early, but you have to know when to use them. During midterms and finals you need to get to the lab five minutes before opening (8 a.m.) to get a computer. I’d say your best bet is to bring a laptop. |
