Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Tufts is a well-wired campus, and you won't hear students complaining about access to computer labs or the Internet connection from their dorm rooms. A large percentate of Tufts students bring their own computers to campus. There is a huge social element to computers at Tufts, and many students use AOL Instant Messenger for all of their communication needs. There are three main computer labs, in addition to computers in the library, although Eaton is the main computing center with two floors and more than 260 computers. Students enjoy that the lab is open later but are quick to complain about the printing charges.

Tufts is not specifically a Mac or a PC campus, and both operating systems are compatible with anything you’ll need for class. The library and the Campus Center have wireless Internet ports as well, so a laptop is probably your best bet if you want to take advantage of portability However, plenty of students choose desktops. While you can certainly survive without one, you’ll be at a social—and potentially academic—disadvantage at Tufts without your own computer.

Solid Network and Wireless Access, Questionable Printing

The computer labs at Tufts are really nice. They have lots of programs and I use all of the Adobe Creative Suite ones there for my job graphic designing for Tufts Dining. If you live downhill, it's a bit of a trek up to the main computer lab in Eaton, but hey at least you won't be gaining that Freshman 15. I'd suggest bringing your own printer because printing can be hard to figure out in the lab or in the library. The network almost never goes down and it's not slow at all. I haven't been anywhere on campus wher there's not wireless access. I HIGHLY suggest bringing your own computer - helps a lot with taking notes in class and makes your trips to the computer lab less frequent.

Important During Finals and Midterms

The computers are great if you want to look up a book in the library, and you can rent one for 4 hours at a time from the Tisch library front desk. Pretty much everyone has their own computers, so there's no problem if you need to use on in the library. However, I've noticed that during finals and midterms , it's really hard to get a computer, due to the fact that almost everyone is using them to study.

Never a Problem If You Need a Computer

There's always a computer on campus if you need to use one. Possibly around exams it might get crowded in the library but I have never had a problem. Most, if not all, of campus is now wireless and most people have their own computers. You do have to pay for printing so depending on how much you need one, it might pay to buy a printer.
