College Prowler Take

You can generalize Tufts guys and girls and still be fairly accurate. They aren’t the best looking—usually a bit on the dorky side—and probably weren’t super-popular in high school, but they still really enjoy partying and socializing. Although Tufts is not a huge school, there are enough students and a relatively even mix of guys and girls that you’re sure to find attractive coeds. Many students agree that the athletes are particularly hot, especially the soccer and lacrosse players.

As far as the dating scene goes, freshmen are generally single; then about halfway through sophomore year, people begin pairing off. If you’re still a loner by senior year, you’ll probably find yourself surrounded by couples. Once everyone is attached, it seems like the dating scene is nonexistent and that all the good ones are taken. Never fear—Boston has thousands upon thousands of college students passing through every year, so there is always hope and plenty of opportunities to meet new people.

There’s a weird reputation that Tufts has ugly people, but I disagree with that. Tufts has 4,500 people—you are bound to find someone you like!

There’s the full range of geeks to jocks, granola tree- huggers to Banana Republic princesses. Guys complain that there aren’t any hot girls, but these are also probably the same guys who aren’t getting any dates, so it’s hard to tell.

Tufts is small enough to feel super comfortable, see familiar faces, and know people wherever you go, but there are still a gazillion people to meet that you have never seen before.

There are a lot of nerds here, but there are definitely a lot of people who are down to party, too. The people at Tufts aren’t really good-looking, but there are so many college kids in Boston that it’s not a problem.

The girls at Tufts are definitely better looking than the guys. Although it’s true that people don’t really fix themselves up at Tufts as much as at schools, say, in the South. Girls in general dress more casual, except for the international folks, who are always dressed to the nines.

Social Scene

While other prestigious schools nearby might be buried in their books, Tufts students, while still studious, won't hesitate to leave their books behind and all of a sudden turn into "people people." There are parties going on every weekend, in every corner of campus (or off-campus for that matter), and often, students will take their parties into Boston or Davis Square. There is a certain amount of camaraderie among all students in the Boston area, and they are pretty willing to have any Tufts student come to parties. Though cliques may develop around certain extracurricular activities, no group is exclusive, and they are always looking for new people to tag along. Since first-year students are all on the same meal plan and don't have much homework yet, they tend to spend a lot of time hanging out in dining halls and common rooms. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors pretty much have their friends from their year, and parties become more exciting and common with the passing of each year.

Hookups or Relationships?

Freshman year is dominated by "freshman lust," and freshman relations mainly consist of hookups, except for those few couples who meet the first week of school and stay together until finals week of senior year when they finally realize that they aren't right for each other. Halfway through sophomore year, people begin to pair off and generally stay paired off through junior and senior year. A lot of students complain that by their third year, all the guys or girls worth being with at Tufts are taken. Fortunately for those still unattached, Boston is ripe with students from 55 other colleges.

Dress Code

Tufts students either have their own really unique style, or that standard New England college fare—collared shirts and jeans for the guys; tank tops, jeans, black pants, and tall black shoes for the girls.
