College Prowler Take

Dining off campus can be a great way to bring a little more excitement into your diet, and it’s also a great way to explore the local communities. There are some restaurants already affiliated with Tufts through the MOPS program, and Medford and Somerville have some excellent dining options. If you want to trek a little further, Harvard Square and surrounding Boston, particularly the North End, are full of hundreds of different kinds of foods and local specialties.

Students will often go out to big dinners, lunches, or brunches at local restaurants. Be careful, though, because going out to dinner a lot can get expensive, so make sure to limit dining out to special occasions. Not to worry, though, “settling” for Tufts on-campus eating options certainly does not spell out d-o-o-m for anyone.

There are no on-campus...

There are no on-campus restaurants, but Boston Avenue (with Espresso’s, Nick’s, and Tasty) is a short walk away. They are big on college food—pizza, Mexican, and sandwiches. But if you want fancier stuff, Boston is not that far away. You can also visit Davis Square by Tufts’ shuttle, and there are a lot of good restaurants there, like Joshua Tree, which is one of my favorites.

There are some decent places in Medford, but no really nice places—it’s kind of a crappy town for restaurants. The good places are not on the meal plan, so you have to pay for them—which is inconvenient and expensive.

There are some good restaurants...

There are some good restaurants right near campus. There is one very popular pizza place, Espresso’s, which also sells subs and other foods. There are a handful of decent Asian food places, and one really good one called Rose’s. Of course, if you go into Boston, or even Cambridge with Harvard and MIT, there are endless wonderful restaurants.

There are great surrounding take out places—Espresso’s Pizza is my personal favorite. We have the usual cluster of delivery spots, and the Tufts’ meal plan you have to buy comes with ‘points’ that are good for delivery at three or four restaurants, which is useful for when you don’t feel like walking.

If you like Chinese, Rose’s and Panda Palace are really good—at least better than the other Chinese spots. Anna’s Taqueria is also good if you like Mexican. It’s really close to Tufts, and it’s cheap.
