Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though a good majority of Tufts students bring cars to campus, many agree that they don’t really need to. Boston has amazing public transportation, and the T is not only super-affordable, but it takes you almost anywhere you would ever have to go in the Boston area. The bus is even cheaper than the T, but it’s not nearly as reliable—driving is preferable to the bus route any day.

A car is good if you need to go somewhere that isn’t on the T, and if you live off campus, it becomes very convenient for grocery runs. Don’t worry about having to walk to and from the parking lots—Boston is a very pretty city, which makes walking that much more enjoyable, and Tufts’ hill will enable you to graduate with rock-solid calves. Tufts also offers airport transportation shuttles and other services designed to make things easier for students. The campus safety shuttle, dubbed the “Joey,” is a good way to get around, and you can even take it up the hill to class if you’re feeling extraordinarily lazy. Overall, students are generally satisfied with the quality of transportation in town, and it does allow them a lot of independence.

Transportation

Cabs aren't outrageous in price so they can be helpful for the airport or when you really just don't want to take the T. The Joey bus is convenient even though it runs every 20-30 minutes. I love the T personally to get me almost anywhere in Boston. I wish more of my sophomore friends had a car...even though it is not exactly necessary.

Brilliant Transportation - Easy and Inexpensive.

As a freshman without a car, I'd say that it's very easy to get from Tufts to anywhere in Boston or even Davis Square. From any downhill dorm, Davis is about a ten minute walk, but if you don't feel like walking, you can catch the Joey (bus system) there which is on a 20-25 minute loop. Once in Davis, it's really easy to hop on the T and go into Boston to explore the city, grab a meal or meet friends. You definitely need to get a Charlie card for the T as soon as you get to Tufts: they're like subway gift cards that you put money on and use every time you enter the T system. Subway fare isn't costly (it's 30 cents less every time with a Charlie card!)If you need to get somewhere a little farther away than Boston, you can take the T to the airport or to a commuter rail. As for transportation within Tufts' campus, it's unnecessary. No where on campus is farther than a 15 minute walk.

Good Transporation

There is a free bus that brings Tufts students to Davis Square and several MBTA stops right near campus. In addition, from Davis Square students can take the T (the MBTA subway system) to nearly anywhere in Boston or the surrounding area. Even without access to a car during the school year, I have almost no problem getting where I want to go.
