Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

A number of things might come to mind when one thinks of Tulane, but its athletic department is not one of them. The baseball, basketball, and volleyball teams are some of the best, but they’re still not widely supported amongst the student body. The University’s football games are played in the Superdome, the stadium for the city’s football team (the Saints), but since it’s off-campus and sort of difficult to get to, only a small portion of students end up going to the games regularly.

A lot of students are involved in club sports because of there are so many more sports offered in club than varsity and they are much more laid-back. Intramurals are fun to participate in, but these tend to be much less organized, and they do not last very long—there are only a few games in a season. Both club and intramural sports are a great way to meet new people, but participation isn’t necessary for your social standing. Students who are not involved in sports usually show no support for them or interest in them. No one comes to Tulane because of the sports atmosphere so if you’re a big football or baseball fan, don’t be surprised when there isn’t a huge following.

Not Important

is it so important for athletics to be booming when you are surrounded by a city of beauty? when all the students and teachers join together and celebrate on mardi gras ? the athletics aren't well attended, which doesn't seem to bother us too much because of all the other amazing things on campus, but president cowen is working on this by adding a new football stadium to campus.

Athletics Are Encouraged

Being athletic and healthy is definitely encouraged at Tulane, our gym is grade A and is also used by people in the New Orleans area because of how nice it is. There is some intramural teams, such a volleyball and ultimate frisbee and athletes on the varsity teams are treated great. Games aren't a big part of the social scene here, but people definitely show up and show their support from time to time.

Not So Much

I don't really know much about athletics here and there is not a lot of school spirit for sports here either.

School Spirit

While there many not be huge enthusiasm for the sports teams on campus, Tulane’s students know how to show their pride in just about every other respect. The bookstore sells every kind of clothing imaginable with Tulane’s name on it, though it’s hardly necessary to shop there since just about every event that goes on at Tulane gives out free t-shirts. Students are also very supportive of their clubs and organizations. Sorority girls always have some article of clothing with their Greek letters on them, and Tulane’s rowing team’s shirts are worn in cult following. Clothing is just an external way for students to show their commitment and pride for their school; whether it’s to one or many, Tulane students whole-heartedly support the organizations to which they belong.
