Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

All freshmen are required to have an unlimited meal plan at Bruff, and the sentiments toward this requirement depend on whom you talk to. To some, Bruff is merely a means of eating, and they don’t frequent it more than necessary. For others, Bruff is a great place for socializing and hanging out with friends. Because you can swipe into Bruff up to 99 times a day, many people find themselves running in to grab a drink or some fruit in between meals. Aside from the cultural phenomena of Bruff, there is a wide selection of food ranging from pizza, pasta, and burgers to local-favorite dishes and vegetarian selections. While some complain that the food gets old, the staple foods are always available, and Bruff is constantly trying to improve the quality and selection of its food. The other eateries on campus are set up so that meal dollars (or Greenbucks) buy essentially the same things as real cash. However, for the most versatility it’s best to choose the “debit” option over the Greenbucks system. You can use the cash you put on your student ID to buy much more than food this way, so it’s a lot more convenient (and still safer than carrying cash).

One of the favorites at Bruff is its breakfast buffet, which includes an omelet bar that runs all day on the weekends, and the occasional “theme nights” that have specific types of food, like Asian Fusion for Chinese New Year or Irish food for St. Patrick’s Day. The Rat, in the basement of the LBC, serves WOW Chicken and is one of the few options for late-night cravings. There is also Le Gourmet, which is an organic deli-type establishment that offers a healthy (yet expensive) alternative to other on campus food. You can also always get food delivered or go out to eat if the monotony of Bruff gets to you. Most freshmen will agree that, despite the complaints, Bruff has a special place in their hearts.

Tulane University: a Tale of Bruff, Luff, and Macmart/The LBC

Bruff is Tulane's dining hall, located right above the mail room and MacMart. There really is something for everyone here, from red beans and rice and fried chicken to pizza and the salad bar. Bruff isn't too bad (especially if you are like me and had parents that were horrible cooks), but in the event you get bored, you can head on over to Luff, which is on Loyola's campus, right next door. Luff has slightly better food quality, and not only does your Tulane meal plan work there, also, but you get to meet Loyola students. Just in case neither Luff nor Bruff are appealing, we also have McAlister Market (your Wavebucks work here, and are also part of your meal plan), where you can buy frozen dinners, Ramen, and the fixings for PB&J and the LBC, which has everything from fresh bagels to a Panda Express (your wavebucks work here, too). If none of that works for you, hey, YOU'RE IN NEW ORLEANS. Conveniently located near campus are the Camilla Grill, as well as any number of Italian, French, and Sandwich shops, and we're a short trolly ride from the French Quarter, for authentic gumbo.

Solid, but Can Get Old Quickly

The places around campus are fine. The dining hall has a little variety, but I'm a picky eater, so I'm able to deal with it. I hear a lot of kids complain about it, but I realize that it's not that great at other colleges anyway, so in comparison Tulane dining is pretty good.

Go Off Campus

Tulane has only one dining hall (Bruff Commons) but a bunch of other places to eat around campus. The food at Bruff is nothing special and pretty much just like any other college campus dining hall. The meal options do get a little repetitive but the food is still decent. There are 2 PJs Coffee Houses on campus, and the RAT in the student center (open till 4am) has the best fast food around (with some healthy options of course). The LBC Center for University Life also hosts a variety of dining options in its food court. Students also frequently utilize the plethora of off campus restaurants that have some of the best food in the country.

Did You Know?

Students have the option of putting “Greenbucks” or debit money onto their Tulane cards to eat in the LBC. It’s best to go with the debit option, because you can only spend Greenbucks on food and not for laundry, coffee at PJ’s, or at the bookstore.
