Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For freshmen, the most popular dorms are Monroe and Sharp, which house a majority of the freshman class. Most agree that they are old, ugly, and pretty gross, but there’s a big social factor about living in these dorms. The other freshman dorms are JL, Butler, Paterson, and Wall. JL is the all-female dorm that has fairly large rooms with sinks but isn’t very popular because it is so far away from all the other dorms. Butler is the honors dorm, and it has a great location (right across from Bruff and a block from Reily), but the rooms are very small, and the building is rather ugly. Paterson is the “wellness dorm,” but on campus it’s known as the “hippie dorm.” Its rooms are either double with a sink or suite-style, and some rooms have their own balconies. Wall is the newest dorm on campus and is made up completely of suites. Some not living there complain that Wall isn’t a social dorm, but many of its inhabitants seem to disagree.

For upperclassmen, Irby and Phelps are the sophomore equivalents to Monroe and Sharp. These look like motels because the doors to the rooms face outside, and they are considered the more social dorms for sophomores. Other upperclassmen dorms include Willow, Mayer, Warren, and Aron. You are required to live on campus during your freshman and sophomore years, but after that, most chose to leave Tulane’s housing behind them and move off-campus. Although the dorms may not be the best, most people tend to agree that they are bearable.

Things Are Decent

The dorms at Tulane are decent to good. Some, like Monroe and sharp, are for college freshman in New Orleans. So they are party dorms, with things getting broken all the time, plus they are rather dirty. Other dorms, such as Willow and Wall, are much nicer. They have kitchens, laundry rooms, lounges, and more on every floor. Plus you have your bathroom and sink. They are also well kept, and just overall very nice. They are slightly farther from classes, but still nothing that bad.

Large Variety

Each freshmen dorm on campus is very unique so you can find what you are looking for. Some people want something super social but the dorm isn't the cleanest-Sharp/Monroe, some people want to be around really smart kids but it might not be the most social-Butler, some may want really nice rooms with their own bathroom but again, it's not very social-Wall. There is also JL-all girls dorm, and Patterson-wellness dorm.

Decent Housing Options

Freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus. Living on campus is super convenient and easy. The quality of the freshmen dorms are typically of most other colleges, unless you live in Wall or JL.
