Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Not a day goes by that you don’t see a TUPD officer on a bike, walking around campus, or manning the front desk of your dorm. It’s strange to think that the police are so highly visible and yet relatively lax, but this is definitely the case at Tulane. Cops simply shake their heads when they see drunk and disorderly students and do little to punish such behavior. The social life at Tulane is very dependent on alcohol, so they are used to seeing this kind of behavior year after year. New Orleans in general is very laid back when it comes to underage drinking. Drugs are a different issue, however, with both the campus and the city. If students are caught possessing or dealing drugs, NOPD is called in and the consequences are serious. The minimum penalty for possession involves a referral to health services, community service work, and parental notification; you can even get expelled and arrested for possessing certain substances.

On the whole, TUPD is more concerned with the safety of Tulane students than with busting them. This attitude allows many students to have “favorite” TUPD officers and get to know them on a first-name basis. The relationship between TUPD and Tulane students truly is unique, especially in comparison to other universities.

Secured

I feel secured walking on campus at night. The police officers ride their bikes throughout campus, watching for abnormal activities. Although many robberies are reported on a weekly basis. Always be aware of your surrounding. And not walking alone past midnight, drunk.

Practically a Joke

Campus police are very friendly and don't often bust students for drinking or smoking pot. If you are caught drinking in a dorm (like by an RA), you are sent to Housing and Resident Life for a meeting. The first time you get a warning, and after that you may be fined or forced to attend an alcohol education program. Unless your doing hard drugs or busted all the time, you not going to get into very much trouble.

Minimal Campus Strictness

Because Tulane is located in a city with such high crime rate, our police department is more focused on maintaining campus safety as opposed to regulating the drinking on campus. It is easy to have alcohol in the room and unless you are caught red handed with a drink in your hand by a resident advisor you will not get in trouble.
