Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Internet at Tulane is fast and free, there is a large and accessible wireless network, and printing is free (to a point—you get at least 250 pages). While Tulane’s computer labs may seem a bit scattered at first, they’ve complied with student demand in creating Willow Cyber Café—a multi-purpose room with computers, space to work, interesting décor, and PJ’s Coffee right next door.

You’ll want to have your own computer for both convenience and necessity. It’s also a good idea—though not quite as important—to get your own printer, because you never know when you will need to print a handout or presentation notes before class. A laptop should definitely be something to consider at Tulane, as well, because of the extensive wireless network that Technology Services has set up across campus. You can connect at almost any of the academic buildings and at the newer residence halls as well. This can be a great asset because it allows you to work anywhere with your own computer.

File-sharing isn’t a strong issue at Tulane right now, but these things can change pretty quickly given the legal climate. Sharing copyrighted materials is discouraged by Technology Services, and students are instructed to uninstall any peer-to-peer programs. Tulane’s technicians are excellent with helping incoming freshman to set up their internet when they move in, and with fixing computer problems for students throughout the year.

Good Computers, Old System

While Tulane has many nice Mac computers in several different campus locations that are really only full during the night on weekdays and around finals, some of the keyboards don't work and the internet access can be slow. WiFi is available but you have to get it set up with technology services which is a bit of a hassle. Otherwise though Tulane is pretty tech savvy.

Good Computer Availability

Computers are very nice and there is always availability. There are many places where computer labs are located. Lots of students bring their own laptops, but it's never necessary or a requirement.

Computer Labs

There are various computer labs around the school, particularly in the business school. Although the business school computer labs are technically for bschool students only, it isn't hard to get access. There are times when the internet is extremely slow or doesn't work at all. It's usually during finals time when you need it the most. You get $25 worth of printing credit a semester, but the business school computer labs have free printing. I would recommend having your own computer.
