Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Other than marijuana and cocaine, there are not that many drugs that are heavily used on campus. However, alcohol is considered a drug, and a lot of students abuse it. Tulane EMS is constantly picking up people for alcohol poisoning, and there are plenty of drunks walking around on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. If you don’t like harder drugs, they are easily avoided, but trying to avoid the prevalence of alcohol is nearly impossible. Parties are dominated by kegs and shots, and when students go out it is usually to bars or clubs to drink. Tulane really does not have a strong drug/alcohol counseling service, and there has been concern about this recently because there is usually a student that overdoses on drugs each school year.

An important thing to remember, especially at Tulane, is that you can’t assume who’s involved in the drug scene. With any rich school, students have more money to buy drugs; intelligent, affluent students are just as likely as anyone else to be buying or selling drugs. Also, given a city like New Orleans, there’s going to be a certain amount of substances, legal and otherwise, no matter where you go. Obviously you won’t see people drinking in the middle of the day when walking on campus, but the weekends and nightlife are surrounded by alcohol.

Alcohol and Weed

Tulane is in New Orleans, so there is a lot of alcohol. I have also noticed a lot of pot use, but I would say alcohol is much more prominent. Still, it isn't all that difficult to avoid it if you wish; there are definitely opportunities to go out and socialize without having to drink.

Drug Safety

In New Orleans alcohol is visible and pretty accessible, however drugs are not at all as common. In four years of going out around campus, I've never actually seen hardcore drugs.
