Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The Lavin-Bernick Center for University Life is one of Tulane’s newest and nicest buildings. Fully equipped, the LBC is not only a great facility in terms of its environmentally friendly structure (it has water walls for cooling, windows to maximize natural illumination, electric lights within the building which automatically adjust depending on the amount of outside light, wave fans in the dining room, solar vents on the interior, and sun shading louvers on the exterior)—it also has great functionality. Housing a Barnes & Noble bookstore, a food court with Taco Bell, Einstein Brothers, and WOW Chicken, a FedEx, a salon and barbershop, a Whitney bank, and a plethora of study areas and conference rooms, the LBC is every Tulane student’s one-stop shop.

Bruff Commons and Howard Tilton Library are older and more dated buildings that hopefully will be remodeled in the near future. Some residence halls (especially those for freshmen) and other buildings are also in obvious need of renovations, but the university seems to be continually improving its facilities. Most buildings on campus, especially in the academic quad, are beautiful buildings and go well with the green spaces and the large trees surrounding them. In terms of athletic facilities, Reily is an excellent gym with fairly new cardio equipment and a large weight room. There are a lot of fitness classes that you can take for free because of the student membership to the gym, and there are also Yoga, Pilates, and other classes available for a fee.

Tulane Working Out

Tulane has a wide variety of facilities on and off campus. Between the athletic center, Reily, and Audobon Park, there is always a good place for a work out. Reily offers many machines as well as areas to work out such as the weight room, basketball courts, and the track. Audobon Park, located right across from campus is a beautiful park with a track for people to run. Always very fun and beautiful scenery

Cafeteria Is Not for Vegetarians.

Last year they had a platform in the cafeteria designated for vegetarian food. This year, though they still advertise it on their website, they have completely gotten rid of this as an option, making it extremely difficult to find a decent meal other than salad. They have many other stations that are able to cook you food sans meat, but the workers don't seem to understand that most vegetarians don't what their food to be cooked in a pan that hasn't been washed out since having meat in it. The managers claim that there is a vegetarian skillet at every single station, but the workers who cook the food don't seem to know what or where that is. Freshman are required to have a dining meal that costs around $2300 a semester. This is much higher than it would ever cost to cook my own well-balance meals.

Favorite Things To Do

If you can’t find anything to do inside Tulane’s facilities, you will definitely be able to find some activity on one of Tulane’s many green quads. Hardly a day passes without a pick up game of Cricket or Frisbee on the LBC quad.

TUCP does a decent job at bringing music to Tulane. This year has seen the likes of Third Eye Blind, Lupe Fiasco and Reel Big Fish. Other performances include comedy such as Whitest Kids U Know.

Almost everyday there is at least one speaker on campus in any given field. On top of the plethora of departmental speakers, Tulane makes an effort to bring in famous and interesting people. This year has included lectures such as Francis Collins, former governor Mick Huckabee and former congressman Herald Ford Jr.

Tulane University houses its own Art Gallery in the Woldenberg Art Center that is free and often displays student work. This year it was apart of New Orlean’s Prospect 1, a citywide art show.

The men and women’s basketball teams play in Fogelman Arena and the baseball team plays games at Turchin Stadium. You can also watch the tennis matches, soccor games, and other sports on campus.
