Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you go Greek, it will likely be a dominant part of your college life, but if you decide that it isn’t your thing, the Greek scene won’t affect you at all. There is the option of going to frat and sorority parties during the fall semester, and the opportunity to rush and pledge in the spring semester. Other than being bombarded with people wearing Greek T-shirts, flip-flops, pins, etc., there is not much Greek on the Tulane campus.

People who are in fraternities and sororities are very loyal to their organization and make it a priority right up there with school work. You rarely ever hear of someone hating the Greek system, and few leave fraternities/sororities once they’ve joined. Greek life is a great way to make new friends, boyfriends and girlfriends, and connections for the future. Greek students tend to be fiercely loyal to their organizations and to their pledge groups, and many of these loyalties extend beyond the college years.

At Tulane, you won’t feel pressured to join one of these organizations, and your social life isn’t going to suffer if you choose to avoid pledging. Being in a sport or a club can provide almost the same network as any sorority or fraternity and can be just as fun.

Greeks: Fun but It's Not the End of the World If You Aren't One

Greek life at Tulane is fun, but isn't as big as the Greek's would like to think they are. It's no state school. But generally, greek life is pretty chill and it's fun to pre-game at greek parties, before you actually go out. A lot of greeks take themselves way too seriously. It's usually the kids who weren't that cool in high school or recently got hot. Basically the insecure kids. Frats have the most disgusting accommodations known to man. But then again, I guess guys don't really care about cleanliness. Sororities have pretty cute houses, but no one really wants to live in the house cause of restrictions.

Gets Bad Sometimes

"Frat row" lies between campus and a lot of off-campus student housing, so it's difficult to avoid the greek sector. On occasion, fraternities come under fire for illegal and/or immoral actions--and with good cause.

They still haven't determined the cause of either of the fires that destroyed two separate frat houses within months of each other.

Frat Stars

Greek life has a strong, but not overbearing presence on campus. This is no SEC school, and "GDIs" and the like can sill have active social lives without pledging, but the Greek community is strong and beneficial to the school. I didn't pledge - many of my friends did - and I never felt any unwanted pressure.
