Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s common knowledge that New Orleans is one of the most dangerous cities in the country. However, this does not mean that Tulane students are in constant danger, and in fact, most students agree that they feel very safe on campus. The most frequent crime that occurs on campus is theft, but even that is minimal. The real concern is when students travel off campus, especially at night and while intoxicated. This year, Tulane students have experienced multiple muggings and sexual assaults, most taking place at night and involving alcohol.

The most important thing to remember about staying safe is to play it smart. Never walk anywhere alone at night—the larger the group the better. Stay in well-lit areas, and don’t wander too far from the more highly populated areas around campus. Safe Ride is a fantastic service that runs in a two-mile radius around campus and will pick students up and drive them home. Tulane police are always patrolling campus and the surrounding area, and while it sometimes seems that they only like to give out parking tickets, the officers are actually fairly concerned about the larger picture of keeping the students safe. Common sense is the best defense against crime in New Orleans and at Tulane, so keep your wits about you, and things should be fine.

Safety on Campus

I feel safe generally safe on campus. I would feel unsafe if I were walk alone off campus at night. However, this is to be expected at any university in an urban setting.

Safe on Campus

I live somewhat far from campus, so I'm not privy to what goes on around campus. Security on campus seems good though.

Safe If You're Smart

Tulane takes a lot of measures to make sure kids on campus feel safe, key word being "feel." You always get emails about off campus robberies or armed robberies, and there are definitely bigger issues too (15 people getting shot on halloween in the french quarter).

Bottom Line, Tulane protects you, and as long as you're smart and aware of your surroundings, you'll be safe.
