Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Ask around about which professors to take.
  • August is HOT and HUMID.
  • Community bathrooms really aren’t that bad.
  • Put at least the minimum amount of Greenbucks on your card—you’ll appreciate it when MacMart is the only place open and you have no money.
  • The NOLA Experience is a great way to meet other freshmen.
  • There is a LOT of drinking.
  • Use the Roommate Finder. (Random roommates are actually random.)

  • Balance partying with school!
  • Do your homework.
  • Don’t go out alone at night.
  • Get to know your professors and TAs.
  • Get your core requirements out of the way sooner rather than later.
  • Go to class.
  • Go to the ERC if you need help or are sick.
  • Keep your door open—it’s a great way to get to know the students on your hall.
  • SLEEP.
  • Stay active.

Life Is a Party

Going to school in New Orleans ensures that you you will never be bored on a Saturday night (or a monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, or friday night)! There is always some sort of festival or concert going on, and if there isn't one, the french quarter is always a party and there are 5 bars within walking distance of campus. You can get the party scene by going to any school in New Orleans, but the special thing about Tulane is that it is a school where very motivated and intelligent students can go to work hard and play hard. Most every one i have met at Tulane has big dreams of success and will work hard to make those dreams a reality, but when the weekend rolls around, they throw down as hard (if not harder) than students at other colleges.

Great School Where You Can Really Party, Safely

Louisiana allows 18 and up into bars. Which is awesome. You can have a ton of fun dancing at several different bars around campus with your friends friday or saturday night. it's a great way to get out of the dorms and have fun. nothing in NOLA is far away, because the streetcar can take you anywhere, but the easy access to bars is especially nice.

Facts

Traditions
  • Commencement Day: Graduates of all schools and colleges of the University march into the Louisiana Superdome, accompanied by banners, heralded by trumpet fanfares, moving to the music of Dr. Michael White’s Original Liberty Jazz Band.
  • Homecoming game: The football game is always played in Tad Gormley Stadium.
  • Nicknames: “Green Wave,” “Greenbacks,” and “Greenies” were created because of the color of the football jerseys.
  • Senior Salute: a special dinner at the residence of the Newcomb Dean, held for senior women who are recognized for their contributions to the college
Urban Legends
  • A popular rumor is that sororities are outlawed on campus because local “brothel laws” prohibit more than a specified number of females from living together (in reality, this isn’t true at all – in fact, Tulane students officially debunked this rumor in 1998 after researching New Orleans law as far back as 1800).
  • Students whose roommates commit suicide automatically receive a 4.0 grade point average for the current school term (another rumor that’s taken hold at many schools).
  • There are many feral cats living under the buildings on the Academic Quad and beneath some of the dorms. Some students believe the cats ferocious and dangerous. If you happen upon the Academic Quad at night, chances are you’ll see multiple cats slinking across the grass.
