Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Students at Tulane, especially the first semester, enjoy taking advantage of the liberal attitudes toward alcohol and the general laid-back feeling of the city. Travel down to the Quarter, and at any given time you’ll be sure to run into people from all over the country and the world who come to New Orleans to have a good time. On top of tourists, New Orleans has its own set of interesting inhabitants who provide a flair to the city’s atmosphere that is rarely seen. New Orleans is also an old city with lots of beautiful architecture and interesting history. It really does have a character unmatched by any other city in the country and is very attractive to students who are always looking for something to do.

Art and music are also in abundance here—on any given night there is live music of all variety as well as art galleries and museums. Local and famous bands come through to perform throughout the year – many musicians and artists make their home in the streets of New Orleans. In terms of sports, New Orleans has football, baseball, and basketball teams to root for. The Audubon Zoo and the D-Day museum are great for animal lovers and history buffs, respectively. Regardless of your interests, you’ll never be able to say there is nothing to do in New Orleans. There is always some sort of festival, parade, game, gallery opening, book reading, or musical group performing at events like Jazz Fest, Frenchmen on Halloween, or the famous Mardi Gras celebration. There are so many opportunities in New Orleans that it seems nearly impossible to do everything. Just remember to take full advantage of the city, and you’ll always find yourself with a good time.

Roll Wave Bubble

New Orleans is an amazing city and even though campus resides in a bubble, that bubble is porous.

Tulane = Uniquely Urban

Tulane a place where urban accessibility is easy for students. However, it is surrounded by large, old and beautiful houses, Loyola University and Audubon Park. Many delicious restaurants are available by street car or a walk. The campus feels safe, but close to off campus there are many robberies. Shopping is not near-by but Tulane provides a shuttle service to make them accessible. Cultural events include Mardi Gras, Crawfest, Oktoberfest, Friday at the Quad (with free local food and a free local band every Friday afternoon), all free Tulane sporting events, a great rec center, and a student attitude of "work hard, party harder." Also, Tulane students have a great reputation for community service.

Awesome City

New Orleans is filled with opportunities to get involved in the community. There are museums, parks, the night-life is incredible, the zoo is great, we're on the Mississippi River, too much to name.

• More than 500,000 king cakes are sold each year in New Orleans between January 6 and Fat Tuesday, and another 50,000 are shipped out-of-state via overnight courier.
• Mardi Gras draws more than 700,000 visitors to New Orleans and, in the past, has generated more than $1 billion for the city.

• Many of the tens of thousands of live oak trees that line the streets and boulevards date back to before the Civil War. They have survived hurricanes, droughts, pests, and fires.
