Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Living in new Orleans is like going to Disney World for a week—there’s no way you can do everything that you want to do in your first year. There are many awesome bars and clubs in the city, and most let 18 and up through the door—and they tend to serve drinks to whomever gets in. Students agree that frat parties are the places to go at the beginning of the year in order to meet people, but going out to bars and clubs off campus is preferred. A lot go to bars that are within walking distance of campus, and these tend to have a large college clientele. If you want to go to the Quarter, it will only cost you $2.50 to get down and back, and there’s always a street party going on down Bourbon (but mostly by tourists). Plus, the clubs down there have good dance music, drink specials, and lots of characters.

The most popular local place is The Boot, a bar across the street from Newcomb Hall and visible from JL. It’s the place to meet up with all your friends before you head out for your night on the town, or the place to regroup after party hopping to all the frats. The happy hour on Friday nights is really popular, and it is usually packed until 9 p.m. After that, however, it’s usually pretty empty until 2 or 3 a.m. If drinking isn’t your thing, don’t sweat it. The French Quarter has tons of music and other types of performances going on every evening of the week. However, because it’s farther away, most choose to stay near campus and party at the bars nearby. Drinking and bar hopping is definitely the most popular form of entertainment, but it’s definitely possible to find sober fun—it just takes a little searching.

It Doesn't Get Better Than NOLA

Seriously. We go to school in the middle of New Orleans. The only nights that don't have out of this world drink specials are Sunday and Monday. A lot of people stay uptown near campus, especially first semester, because its way easier to go to the on-campus bars/frat parties and it's all Tulane/Loyola students, but downtown is always a solid option. We are super-spoiled in that we live in on of the culture capitals of America. There are tons of bars/nightclubs that are 18+ or don't care about the drinking age (just not on Bourbon). Most people are surprised to go home Freshman year and find out that their friends don't spend their Tuesday nights drinking 50 cent shots. If you are 18, you will have zero trouble getting alcohol here. If you are "21", it's laughable how easy it is.

Don't know much about it honestly, as I am too busy to bother with parties. I hear you can find decent frat parties in the immediate area of Tulane. Also, there are many 18-and-older bars in the vicinity.

Can Anyone Say Bourbon?

Tulane University is about a 15 min trolley ride from the french quarter and the infamous bourbon street so there is always something to do if you want to go down there. The only thing it's really hard to get into some places if your not 19 or over unless you do some serious negotiating but overall it's a good time. Across the street from the school is The Boot a local club that is fun if your just looking for some good music but prepare to be packed in there and have to push off a few drunks every now and then. I don't go often because it's the type of place that once you've gone you've pretty much seen everything. Rocco's is another club on maple street which is personally my favorite. They play good music but it is a bit of a walk.

The House of Blues (HOB)

It’s hard to place the HOB into one category. It’s a restaurant, club, and concert venue all in one. There’s a voodoo garden next to the restaurant and bar that visitors can sit in and chat before a show. The Music Hall events include performances from a number of local, national and international acts 365 days a year; late-night dance parties; and the famous Sunday Gospel Brunch. The Parish is a 5,000 square foot multi-use special event space with a state-of-the-art sound system. There is also a private club called the Foundation Room that is for VIPs and HOB members. There’s a prayer room, a dining room, and a lounge that can be used for private parties or for guests during concerts.

The Cat's Meow

Considered to be one of the best karaoke bars in the world, The Cat’s Meow is a very popular spot on Bourbon for tourists and celebrities alike. Paying the cover charge allows you to sing songs for free, but there can be a long wait, and drinks are a bit on the pricy side. DJs play a wide variety of music in between performances. This place is a guaranteed good time if you go with a group of friends. 3 for 1 Happy Hour

The Boot

By the end of your 1st week at Tulane, you’ll know where and what The Boot is. It’s a popular place to “pre-game” it before a big party or to meet up with everyone after a night on the town. The Boot serves as the Tulane/Loyola hangout spot for undergrads of all ages. The DJ plays loud but classic songs, and there are multiple TV screens that show sports and news. Fridays is Happy Hour, 4-9pm, with 3 for 1 longnecks.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Most places in New Orleans you have to be 18 or 19 (like Bruno’s) to get in, so going to clubs and bars is not a problem even if you are underage. The only places that don’t let underage people in are a majority of the strip clubs on Bourbon and a couple of bars on certain nights.
