Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The garage on campus seems big, but you can never find a spot in it, and there is never anywhere to park on campus during the day. It is really easy to get a ticket on campus for parking in the wrong “color zone” or parking in a metered spot at night. City parking is only a little better—there are still many permit areas, timed spaces, and loading zones to watch out for, and it’s easy to park in a bad area. There are also traffic cops all over the place, so even if you’re staying somewhere for a few minutes, it’s best to get a legal space.

Only upperclassmen can get parking permits, though there are always more cars with permits than there is space to park. A lot of freshman bring their cars to Tulane illegally and park on side streets off campus. Some constantly have to park three or four blocks away from campus, which can be not only inconvenient but also dangerous. Especially if you’re leaving your car overnight (or returning to it in the dark), it’s important to get a spot close to the university or in a safe neighborhood. All the spots (besides the garage and a few spots around campus) are parallel, and this is also the case with most of the city itself—you’ll need to know how to parallel park if you’re bringing your car to New Orleans. Having a car can be a huge pain and expense, so this is something to seriously consider before coming to Tulane; the ability to go wherever you want is tempting, but the parking situation probably won’t improve in the coming years.

It's a Mall

Given the fact that the branch campus is located in the mall, there is PLENTY of parking....just pick your spot.

Horrible

Only place to part during class time is in the Diboll parking garage on the very back end of campus farthest away from the academic buildings. Side street parking is an option, but it's often hard to find a place, and there is a two hour limit (meter maids love to lurk around campus side streets and give out $20 parking tickets). Scott Cowen (university president) adamantly opposed to building additional parking. On top of all of this, yearly parking permits are about $550-650 depending on if you commute or are a resident. Freshman cannot have cars.

Parking

Plenty of parking spaces in the on-campus garage, but you have to pay for a parking permit. Spots on the streets around campus are usually really easy to find.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Parking on campus is no easy feat. Tulane purposefully sells more permits than spots available and finding a place to park becomes more like hunting. Not only is it difficult, it’s expensive as well; permits for residential students are nearly $600 a year. Many students bring their cars and try to find parking on the side streets around campus, bypassing the permit altogether.
