Not a Whole Lot

In terms of racial diversity, Tulane really does not have a lot to offer. There is a small community of African American students but rarely do I interact with students of a different race on campus or in class. That being said, Tulane is incredibly geographically, politically, and religiously diverse. There are students who come from every state in America and countries across the globe who provide much needed and interesting outlooks and opinions. Tulane has a substantial Jewish population (30%) and a very outspoken LGBT community. Living in New Orleans also provides the cultural and racial diversity that the school, on paper, lacks.

Gays are good

I just came out this year and the gay community has been really supportive. It's definitely a comfortable environment for me and I've been really accepted. It makes me feel so much better about my decision to come out. I finally feel like I can be myself at Tulane. I love this school!

Large Variety

Each freshmen dorm on campus is very unique so you can find what you are looking for. Some people want something super social but the dorm isn't the cleanest-Sharp/Monroe, some people want to be around really smart kids but it might not be the most social-Butler, some may want really nice rooms with their own bathroom but again, it's not very social-Wall. There is also JL-all girls dorm, and Patterson-wellness dorm.

I LOVE THIS PLACE

My parents have asked me time and time again, "If you had the chance, would you go any where else?" The answer is always, Hell no. From not knowing this school existed prior to my free application to my current position as a tour guide trying to figure out how to stay as many years as possible, there's no other place I'd rather be. Sure, I could nitpick and say things about how I don't like the most trivial of things or I may still have a bad day, but that happens everywhere and this experience has been second-to-none. The city is so close that the opportunities to experience NOLA culture is available 24/7, the service I've done here has changed my perspectives on the world, I have so much fun with everyone I know, the size of the school lets me see old friends and total strangers in the same walk to class, and there are more choices for clubs, activities, and hobbies than I even have time to join. It's not for everyone, I know that. But if you think you might like it, visit. Only at Tulane, Only in New Orleans.

kids do their own things, people wear nice clothes to class one day and show up in sweats the next and its all ok. some kids are very involved in greek life and politics and others are involved in music and school activities. Big Easy

There's literally so much to do in New Orleans. Whether you like the going out bar scene, music venues, good food, there's always something to do. Tulane also has started to offer events on weekends for those who don't like to go out.

Non-Stop Entertainment

New Orleans is an incredibly fun city to attend college in. There are hundreds of bars and night life spots, wonderful restaurants, and easy transportation in the form of the streetcar. Of course, Mardi Gras in the Spring semester is a huge deal too.

Well, It IS New Orleans...

New Orleans is bipolar to the extreme; one day it will be 75, the next 50. And it could be either January or September. Also, even when it gets cold, it still tends to feel humid, which sort of settles in your bones. It also rains a decent amount, so bring rain boots and keep an umbrella handy. HOWEVER, there are palm trees and you can wear shorts year-round, so it is worth it.

VERY Diverse

Tulane is a heavily Jewish school, is very gay-friendly and has a huge feminine vibe that still shows through Newcomb College (the former all-women's school that merged with Tulane). There is a Hillel for Jews that has excellent food and is accepting and excited to serve all students of all religions. Tulane also offers many Christian opportunities. There are countless opportunities for scholarships and activities to advantage women. Also, the percentage of blacks is seemingly high as well. However, most students come from a very wealthy background, and it is not difficult to observe that. I have not been able to discuss politics with people, but many of them seem fairly liberal.

Life Is a Party

Going to school in New Orleans ensures that you you will never be bored on a Saturday night (or a monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday, or friday night)! There is always some sort of festival or concert going on, and if there isn't one, the french quarter is always a party and there are 5 bars within walking distance of campus. You can get the party scene by going to any school in New Orleans, but the special thing about Tulane is that it is a school where very motivated and intelligent students can go to work hard and play hard. Most every one i have met at Tulane has big dreams of success and will work hard to make those dreams a reality, but when the weekend rolls around, they throw down as hard (if not harder) than students at other colleges.

Geographic Diversity

It seems like everyone you meet is from a different state or a different country. There is an inordinate amount of people from New Jersey and New York, but not overwhelming by any means. I will say however that the the school is not very religiously diverse. Most of the students are Jewish, but again, it is not overwhelming by any means.

Great School Where You Can Really Party, Safely

Louisiana allows 18 and up into bars. Which is awesome. You can have a ton of fun dancing at several different bars around campus with your friends friday or saturday night. it's a great way to get out of the dorms and have fun. nothing in NOLA is far away, because the streetcar can take you anywhere, but the easy access to bars is especially nice.

Incredible Cajun Food

New Orleans is world-renowned for its amazing, unique cuisine. I must admit, I do not like everything the city has to offer, since I am a very picky eater. Nevertheless, the originality and high quality and amazing taste of New Orleans cuisine is unmatched by any other city in the country, perhaps the world.

Living on Campus as a Freshman

I am a freshman and I live in JL(All Girls Dorm) and I absolutely love it. Over the summer the rooms were freshly painted and equipped with new furniture not to mention the rooms are huge compared to the rooms in other co-ed dorms. The showers are also more personal including a space to dress and un-dress. It was also close to a lot of my classes this semester. The only downfall is that it is the farthest dorm so it is a walk but you get use to it fast. As far as the other freshman dorms (sharp & monroe) I would say they are okay nothing special, livable. I would label the honors dorm wall as the best and if you have time apply to live in these dorms it's well worth it. Sharp & Monroe are more of the party dorms but JL is still very social.

NEW ORLEANS!!

New Orleans is in a sub-tropical climate region, and offers great weather year round. While it is humid the heat is great. It does get a little chilly from december to march (around 45 degrees as a low) but overall the weather is fantastic and is definitely one of the best parts about Tulane.

Houses

Off campus housing usually comes in the form of rented houses. While you can find a place Downtown near the French Quarter, most students stay in the more upperclass uptown area that the campus itself is in. Broadway (the road that runs parallel to the university) contains most of the off campus houses and most of the Fraternity an Sorority housing. There are a bunch of great off campus options in the Uptown area which is the safest place to be in new orleans. Things may get pricy but its easy to find roommates to defer the cost.

Go Off Campus

Tulane has only one dining hall (Bruff Commons) but a bunch of other places to eat around campus. The food at Bruff is nothing special and pretty much just like any other college campus dining hall. The meal options do get a little repetitive but the food is still decent. There are 2 PJs Coffee Houses on campus, and the RAT in the student center (open till 4am) has the best fast food around (with some healthy options of course). The LBC Center for University Life also hosts a variety of dining options in its food court. Students also frequently utilize the plethora of off campus restaurants that have some of the best food in the country.

I feel safe generally safe on campus. I would feel unsafe if I were walk alone off campus at night. However, this is to be expected at any university in an urban setting.
