Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The biggest problem with Union dining seems to be that the students quickly get bored with the repetitious menu offered at the Upperclass and residential dining halls. Both upper and lower offer all-you-can-eat, buffet-style service, though, and the salad bars are always well stocked and maintained. Another issue with campus dining at Union has to do with the meal plans. Freshmen are required to purchase the largest amount of meals per week, which is frustrating because you have to eat a heck of a lot of food to run out of meals on that plan. Lunches cost about five dollars, while dinners will set you back about seven dollars.

If you get completely sick of eating in the two dining halls but don’t have the cash to eat out, you can always opt to chow down at either Dutch Hollow (located in the campus center) or the Rathskellar (located in the basement of Old Chapel). At both of these eateries, students use what is called a declining balance to pay for their food. Each term, every student starts off with a set amount of money (depending on your meal-plan choice) on their declining balance account, and at any point in the term, this balance can be replenished by filling out a form in the Dining Services Office located on the second floor of the Reamer Campus Center. All in all, Union provides its students with good food in a few settings.

They're Making an Effort...

We have 2 dining halls, 4 cafes (including an entirely organic cafe, a starbucks, a typical cafe, and a new sushi bar!), and one grill. What can I say? It's the same typical, repetitive college food you'll find anywhere. I do have to give a lot of credit to our dining office though- they ask us for suggestions on how to improve the dining on campus and really listen. They're making a ton of changes, all for the better!

It Works Out but Needs More Healthy Options

I personally don't like West dining just because I got bored very quickly and it is very out of the way from my dorm, however the omelets are the best thing there. There are a good number of options for students to have other than West. If you are an athlete you get to eat at Upper for your season which I was lucky to be able to do. O3 is the organic stand at Union is awesome. I just wish there was more fresh food available.

West Is Not the Greatest but It Gets Better

West Dining has a horrible reputation for making students constipated however Upper Dining which is for upperclassmen and athletes is amazing. West tends to have the same meals all the time. But then again, there is always free food at events all over campus so its really easy to avoid West.

  • The staff at Dutch has a high turnover rate, but there are two ladies, Anna and Dawn that are known by the entire campus as "the sunshine Dutch girls" who make people's day just by smiling. They've been working at Dutch since Union was all male!
  • Some of the best pizza around can be found at Dutch Hollow. They will even make it to order.
