Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While the diversity of Union certainly seems to be lacking, it is not unusual for a small, expensive, liberal-arts college located in the upper Northeast to lack in diversity. However, there are several clubs and organizations on campus that promote diversity. Union does have a program called the Academic Opportunity Program that attracts inner-city and minority students to Union. While this adds more personality and diversity on campus, the overwhelming majority of the students enrolled at Union are caucasian.

Despite not being diverse in ethnicity, a large majority of the students are diverse in their interests. The college offers many different types of programs and student-run organizations. It’s also worth noting that while there aren’t any racial issues on campus, this may not be the type of school for someone from the inner-city to attend. While not every student has their own trust fund, the school definitely has a preppy feel to it, which isn’t necessarily a good or bad thing.

Lots of Nationalities

A lot of people do not think Union is very diverse, and while it may seem to be homogenous at times, there are definitely people from many different backgrounds, religions, and countries. There are a lot of international students here at Union as well as many students from different nationalities.

Getting There

While there are a lot of rich white kids here, there are increasingly more students of color and ethnicity. But it could be better.

Facts

Gay Pride

This is a tricky one. There aren’t many openly-gay students at Union, and most students (who are) seem to come out during senior year. While there haven’t been any assaults on campus based on sexual orientation, one can assume that if gay students wait so long to become open about their sexuality, the environment probably isn’t complexly gay-friendly. The school does have a strong group on campus called UBGLAD that puts on events such as “Queer Week,” the Vagina Monologues, and hosts other speakers along with the Women Studies Department.

Political Activity

Even though there are many liberal-activist students (many political science majors score internships with Hillary Clinton and have worked on campaigns), there is definitely a feel of quiet conservative sentiment on campus. For better or worse, the liberal students and faculty are more outspoken in their beliefs. It’s more common to see anti-war meetings as opposed to more conservative rallies.

Economic Status

Even though 50 percent of campus receives financial aid, one wouldn’t be able to tell being on campus. While not everyone is rich, there is a status quo of wearing your best at all times, and people who drive nice cars aren’t modest about driving them.

Most Common Religions

People are pretty quiet about religion on campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

African and Latino Alliance of Students, Asian Student Union, Israeli Culture Club, Middle Eastern Civilization and Culture Association, Russian and East European Culture Club, Shakti (Asian Cultural awareness and education), Spanish Club
