Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Though the facilities aren’t state-of-the-art, Union is working on improving its facilities through renovations and technological advances. Many of the facilities on campus are very nice, and a lot of the buildings at Union have been either gone through or are in the process of going through renovation and upgrading. This is true, although the changes seem to be happening at a very slow pace. The gym, for example, is quite small, and when a large number of students are in it, it can become quite warm. It’s also filled with athletes most of the times as well. The school could definitely do something about that space, considering the large number of students who use it daily.

The campus center, the library, and Olin, however, are three gorgeous, modern, technologically-stacked buildings that are in use pretty much around the clock. The students and faculty really appreciate having a comfortable, all-purpose building (Reamer) in the center of campus to meet, eat, shop, and hang out with friends.

Constantly Updated for Science/Engineer Students

The Union College facilities are great--if you're an engineering student. Union is an engineering school, and a liberal arts school second. Many of the social sciences have lost their residences because there simply isn't room for them, pushing them to many random buildings across campus. The engineering students have everything at their disposal, and it seems that the college updates buildings only for those students.

Campus Activities

There is so much to do at Union. Greek Life is a large part of the experience, but so are the programs being run by the continually evolving Minerva House system. All students are assigned to a house at the beginning of their career at Union, and each house is granted a relatively large sum of money to run/host events and activities for the Union community. There is also a movie shown every weekend at eight and again at ten and sporting events are exceptionally attended, particularly the Dutchman hockey games.

Union College: a Personal Touch

The different facilities on campus are great. The library has an enormous collection of books and students can even use the inter-loan library when needed. Not to mention they are able to access course reserves and the catalog online. The library is very quiet and there is always a place to sit. Not to mention there are group study rooms that are sound proof and give students an option to watch a class film on the televisions in the rooms. Aside from the library, there are a ton of campus activities. From the concert committee to the black student union, students always have plenty of options to acquire the full Union experience. Not to mention Union College has a Minerva Program. This program enhances academics, leadership, and socialization. Not only are there a number of study rooms and classrooms provided in each Minerva for professors to hold their classes, but a number of departments hold events for the students to get to know the professors on a personal basis. The program encourages leadership as you are able to run for a position on your Minerva board, help plan events, and decide how to spend the budget. The Minerva program enhances socialization because events are held at the houses where students can become engaged and expand their social circle.

Favorite Things To Do

Student Activities has other options if you are not feeling the fraternity scene on any given night. Comedians, musicians, and speakers from across the country are always stopping by Old Chapel to entertain. Check out a newly-released movie in the Reamer Campus Center Auditorium on the weekends, or if you want to remain in the comforts of your dorm room, simply rent a film at the information desk in the College Center. Don’t miss the end of the term play that Union puts on in Yulman Theater, and for those of you who want to kick back on a comfy couch, have a cup of joe and listen to music and poetry—the coffeehouse is at your service.

Union was voted #1 from Princeton Review with activities do on campus. The motto with students is if you’re bored, then you must be doing something wrong. With a variety of places to attend, there is always some activity going on. In Yulman Theater, student plays take place. In the campus center, pretty much everything happens from movies to lectures to chowing down. In the Nott, there are special functions, speakers, and cocktail parties. Also, there is ample space for student and non-student art exhibits. Old Chapel is primarily used for speakers, concert space, comedians, and other entertainment-centered activities. The arts building houses a gallery where students and non-students can display their hard work in the visual arts over the course of the term. With the Minerva Housing System, each has events such as coffeehouses, bands, parties, and movie nights.
