School Slang
  • Doid: A not-so-nice name for the people who live in Schenectady.
  • The Skeller: Short for Rathskeller, a small grill on campus.
Traditions
  • : The Naked Nott run is something every student is supposed to do at least once before graduating from Union. Literally, you strip down and run circles around the historic, 16-sided building in the middle of the campus. Sport teams and the fraternities and sororities definitely take the Nott run seriously.
  • : Sex in the middle of the football field or "U," as it has come to be called, is also one of those things students are "supposed" to do before graduation.
  • : The campus crawl happens once a year and it entails walking from one fraternity to the next and having a drink at each one. This usually takes place during an afternoon in the spring. It's simply amazing.
  • : Spring Fest is just a day where students can chill out and enjoy some great bands and other activities during spring term. Union spends a lot of time and money to make this day nice.
  • : One last thing you have to do before graduating from Union is paint the Idol (a statue on campus). It is an ugly-looking lion in between the football field and hockey rink, and it literally has thousands of layers of paint on it from years and years of abuse!
Urban Legends
Jackson's Garden, the oldest cultivated garden on an American college campus, is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman who was killed in 1672 by a mob after her father shot and killed her suitor.
Favorite Things To Do
Student Activities has other options if you are not feeling the fraternity scene on any given night. Comedians, musicians, and speakers from across the country are always stopping by Old Chapel to entertain. Check out a newly-released movie in the Reamer Campus Center Auditorium on the weekends, or if you want to remain in the comforts of your dorm room, simply rent a film at the information desk in the College Center. Don’t miss the end of the term play that Union puts on in Yulman Theater, and for those of you who want to kick back on a comfy couch, have a cup of joe and listen to music and poetry—the coffeehouse is at your service. Union was voted #1 from Princeton Review with activities do on campus. The motto with students is if you're bored, then you must be doing something wrong. With a variety of places to attend, there is always some activity going on. In Yulman Theater, student plays take place. In the campus center, pretty much everything happens from movies to lectures to chowing down. In the Nott, there are special functions, speakers, and cocktail parties. Also, there is ample space for student and non-student art exhibits. Old Chapel is primarily used for speakers, concert space, comedians, and other entertainment-centered activities. The arts building houses a gallery where students and non-students can display their hard work in the visual arts over the course of the term. With the Minerva Housing System, each has events such as coffeehouses, bands, parties, and movie nights.
