Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Doid: A not-so-nice name for the people who live in Schenectady.
  • The Skeller: Short for Rathskeller, a small grill on campus.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Schenectady is not the mecca of culture.
  • Students are very wealthy.
Tips to Succeed
  • Don’t fall behind! The trimester system is brutal for slackers.
  • Get off campus often—meet nice upperclassmen who will show you cool places to hike and eat in Albany and Saratoga Springs.
  • Take advantage of the Becker Career Center, especially for summer jobs, as we get out mid-June.
  • Talk to your professors after class—most students want to hide and if you introduce yourself, most professors will remember you.
  • Try to schedule your classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Campus Kitchens!

Campus Kitchens has recently come to Union College, which is a great way for students to reach out to the community and conserve resources! This program offers an opportunity for excess food to be used constructively to prepare meals for those in need around the community.

Facts

Traditions
  • : Sex in the middle of the football field or “U,” as it has come to be called, is also one of those things students are “supposed” to do before graduation.
  • : The Naked Nott run is something every student is supposed to do at least once before graduating from Union. Literally, you strip down and run circles around the historic, 16-sided building in the middle of the campus. Sport teams and the fraternities and sororities definitely take the Nott run seriously.
  • : The campus crawl happens once a year and it entails walking from one fraternity to the next and having a drink at each one. This usually takes place during an afternoon in the spring. It’s simply amazing.
  • : One last thing you have to do before graduating from Union is paint the Idol (a statue on campus). It is an ugly-looking lion in between the football field and hockey rink, and it literally has thousands of layers of paint on it from years and years of abuse!
  • : Spring Fest is just a day where students can chill out and enjoy some great bands and other activities during spring term. Union spends a lot of time and money to make this day nice.
Urban Legends Jackson’s Garden, the oldest cultivated garden on an American college campus, is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of a young woman who was killed in 1672 by a mob after her father shot and killed her suitor.
