Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It is certainly fair to say that the city is a work in progress. It is certainly fair to say that the city is a work in progress. Despite the certain areas that students tend to avoid, such as Hamilton Hill and some parts of State Street, the immediate area surrounding Union offers many great areas for students with delicious restaurants, great from special occasions or a date nights. The Stockade, for example, has the old-town feel and brown-stone beauty of, say, the South End in downtown Boston. Jay Street has a couple of fun shops and restaurants to survey. Well-known plays and independent films are always riding through town and showing at Proctor’s Theater. Certain neighborhoods located behind the college boast huge, colonial, wood-shingled houses that are just fun to look at. Basically, the good parts are there if you are willing to go out and find them.

Many students don’t venture out into Schenectady until their sophomore year, but those that do find hole-in-the-wall cafés with a lot of local flavor. Ambition on Jay Street is a great coffeeshop and café that will accept student charge accounts. It is a great place to go on dates or just looking to get off campus. Next to it is Earthly Delights, which is one of the few hippie-food stores in the area. They specialize in soy and other organic groceries. But while Schenectady has many things to offer students, the town itself is definitely not geared towards Union students.

Small Town Feel

Lincoln Nebraska is a big town, but Union college is about 5 miles away from down town in a small area that makes it feel like you live in a small town. Union is in walking distance of over ten different restaurants, and some shops.

The area around Union is improving. More and more sites are being renovated and built up. However, there are still unsafe areas surrounding the campus.

Schenectady- Not So Sketchy After All!

A lot of people offer much cynicism when asked to describe the city of Schenectady. However, coming from a town of only 1 stoplight and no fast food joints in sight- I was in heaven. Sure, there are parts of Schenectady that are sketchy- but what city isn't sketchy? Just like if you were in New York City, there are some streets you wouldn't want to be walking down at 2am by yourself, but then again, there are some streets where it would be perfectly acceptable to do so. My favorite part of Schenectady is State Street. On State Street, you can find Bomber's bar with great mexican food, a brand new cinema, the historical Proctor's theater, and multiple coffee shops and pizza joints. It is definitely evolving into a classic college town!
