Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Union definitely has the reputation of being a party school. Wednesdays are the new Thursdays. That is when everyone goes out just because it works into most people’s class schedules better. Monday is also becoming a “go out” night, but Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays are usually when you will see the most students out at night. Chet’s on-campus bar is open Monday (in the spring), Wednesday (always), and Friday for happy hour (always).

Students will usually drink somewhere with friends (depending on your age) and then go to Rupsis or Geppetto’s (if they are looking for a bar). If you don’t drink, there are usually non-alcohol related activities happening around Union from campus movies (which show every weekend) to concerts and comedians. If you look for it, you can find it. There are students who choose not to drink, and no one really pressures them to get wasted, though many students choose to drink. The comedians are great, and the movies are usually pretty good, but don’t expect to find many ‘cool’ parties late Friday or Saturday night without alcohol being served.

Frats are huge. Minervas nonexistent.

Socially I feel as though admissions really misleads prospective students. The minerva program was greatly emphasized during information sessions and tours. Fraternities were underplayed and I was led to believe that the minervas were the driving social force on campus. Since arriving, it's evident to me that this is not the case. Union is very much frat dominated. Although the minerva houses throw events, they are poorly attended and often feel somewhat forced. I think that the "fratty" college experience is right for some people, but it's not right for me. The combination of the frats with the isolation of the campus from the community of Schenectady makes me feel like I'm trapped in a drunken bubble.

Party Scene

The party scene at Union is outrageous. There is no such thing as 'casual drinking' is you don't go all out, its not worth attending the school. For those who look to avoid the drinking, partying, frat-life scene then Union is not the college for you.

We are more of a frat and house party school. However there are some bars.

Organization Parties

Party in the Gardens is probably the most popular event thrown every spring at Union. The school sets up tents in Jackson’s Gardens and students get dressed up to dance the night away under the stars in a beautiful setting. Club U is typically for the newly-arrived freshmen to get together and dance in the campus center for the evening, but usually upperclassmen go as well. There are also semi-formals here and there, but for the most part, if you’re stone cold sober, you’re not in the majority.

Bar ListingsWhat's This?

Rupsis Tavern

Rupsis, which has been around since 1940, is known for its wings. The tavern offers a 5 p.m.–7 p.m. Friday happy hour, during which you’ll get free pizza and wings, and discounted draft specials. Try the chicken dough bake.

Geppetto’s

Geppetto’s doubles as an inexpensive pizza place and a popular bar. It’s available for parties and events, and often features live music on the weekends, in which case there’s a small cover (usually in the neighborhood of $5).

547 Nott St.

Chet’s

This is the primary Union student hangout, mostly because it’s cheap and located right on campus. Plenty of clubs and frats hold events there, and the bar often hosts live bands.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Stay on campus or go to a frat party. You can make a Saturday night fun by catching the 10 p.m. movie on campus and then chillin’ in someone’s room.
