Off-campus restaurants are there—you just have to know where to look. Knowledge of the non-Union eateries comes with experience and an intense desire to escape the monotony of Dutch and Upperclass dining halls. Having a car is a plus when it comes to eating out, but places like Ambition, Peter Pause, the Van Dyck, and Pinhead Susan’s are within walking distance. For the most part, Union’s surrounding area provides at least a dozen excellent options for eating elsewhere.

If you are willing to travel a little farther for your food, you can head over to Saratoga or Albany where there are tons of wonderful little gems that can fill your tummy. You may have to borrow a friend’s car or wait until you can have your own on campus (freshmen are not allowed cars) to get to some of the most scrumptious places around Schenectady, Latham, and Albany. It really isn’t that big of a deal because you can always find something.

Not Great

There aren't many options off campus. Most things are accessible by foot and they're okay, but not much to rave about. The best food off campus is Bombers, but that's not surprising considering it was set up FOR Union students. It was started by a Union graduate and has been very successful in the area. Off-campus dining is better accomplished if students go off to Albany or the surrounding cities.

Small City Dining

Even though Schenectady is a small city, there are plenty of off-campus dining options. One block over from school, in downton Schenectady, there's a slew of unique and quaint restaurants that are great places to go to with your family whenever they come to visit, or even if you feel like eating off campus on any given night! The options are very diverse ranging from dinners, to delis, and even to upscale Italian restaurants that are loved by all. Definitely a favorite is Mr. Wasabi on Union St., a few blocks up from school.

Off Campus Dining

There are some local restaurants that are in walking distance and are very good. If you have a car you can drive to the mall complex where there are more fast food places.
